Synopsis

We are now in the early 18th century, the Kyouhou era, when the merchant culture was flourishing. In Yoshiwara, the red light district of Edo, there is a popular courtesan with good looks and character, called Usugumo. She in fact is a daughter of a Christianized prostitute and Tokugawa Yoshimune (who was a real historical character and the 8th Shogun of Japan), but the power struggle in these times doesn't allow her to be with her father. Her fate is about to change when she meets the blond haired thief, Kikunosuke. With Kikunosuke, a doctor named Aoto Touichirou, who uses the yet unfamiliar Western medicine, and her pet cat, Kotetsu, Usugumo forms a thief group, the Kikugumi. In the meanwhile, a member of a mysterious group appears, aiming for Usugumo...

Edo never sleeps, but your brain might during this.
Going in blind to the manga I’ll be objective to the OVA only. Exceptionally average, Oedo wa Nemurenai! Offers a historical setting in 1700s yoshiwara. The famous pleasure district. Our main character is quite a young woman and Oiran and is for some reason important you’ll find out. (also pay attention to that cat!!! What happened there)

Production quality is at most times quite poor, out of sync voice acting, many still/panning shots, and very low movement. This is all to be expected for something low budget. For anyone who has not read the source material the ...

Spoiler
I don't know if I didn't pay enough attention watching this, but I didn't understand anything of what was happening, there is almost no context for the situations that occur in the story.

At first I thought it was a story about three thieves or swindlers, I thought it would be exciting, but no, everything starts with conflict without any context, a thief who steals, but there is no context as to why he does it, an enemy also appears out of the blue and there’s no explanation about him or what the conflict he has with the three protagonists is, there is absolutely no context ...
