Psycho-Pass

Justice, and the enforcement of it, has changed. In the 22nd century, Japan enforces the Sibyl System, an objective means of determining the threat level of each citizen by examining their mental state for signs of criminal intent, known as their Psycho-Pass. Inspectors uphold the law by subjugating, often with lethal force, anyone harboring the slightest ill-will; alongside them are Enforcers, jaded Inspectors that have become latent criminals, granted relative freedom in exchange for carrying out the Inspectors' dirty work.

Into this world steps Akane Tsunemori, a young woman with an honest desire to uphold justice. However, as she works alongside veteran Enforcer Shinya Kougami, she soon learns that the Sibyl System's judgments are not as perfect as her fellow Inspectors assume. With everything she has known turned on its head, Akane wrestles with the question of what justice truly is, and whether it can be upheld through the use of a system that may already be corrupt.

Background

An edited version of the series received a rebroadcast starting July 10, 2014. 22 episodes of the original series were combined into eleven 46-minute long episodes with some scenes being slightly extended.

Psycho-Pass aired on Fuji Television's noitaminA block. In the 2013 Newtype Anime Awards it was voted as fourth best title of the year. Its 11th episode was awarded "Best Episode" in the Noitamina 10th anniversary fan vote. It has spawned several video-game spin-offs, a novel series and a manga series as well.

This review is for Psycho-Pass, the first season of the series.

Summary:
Psycho-Pass is a psychological, detective-style show set in the future. Law enforcement is governed by the Sibyl System, which utilizes a person’s hue and Crime Coefficient to determine their mental state and likelihood of committing a crime. Psycho-Pass combines mystery with action, and it touches on themes of authority, freedom, governance, and morality. The general story is interesting, and many characters make this show worthwhile, though it is not a masterpiece. If you are interested in sci-fi or detective shows, this is likely a great treat. I do suggest deeply considering your interest after ... finishing season 1, as subsequent seasons are not as profound.

Story: 8/10
The story starts strong and continues until the end with suspense and interesting themes. As the story progresses, many characters are faced with challenging decisions, and the plot is written in a way to really highlight the themes and questions being posited about authority and, in this case, the Sibyl System. There is a particular cat and mouse chase between Ko and the antagonist which emphasizes these themes, as well. Aside from the very abrupt ending in the final episode, the story is well-paced. A relative shortcoming, however, is that there are significant plot points, including a massive reveal to the main character (no spoilers), that goes generally unaddressed in this season and the following seasons.

Art: 8/10
The art is fitting, and the detail in the cityscapes is wonderful, and even a more “nature” scene near the end of the season is quite beautiful.

Sound: 6/10
The music is average. The voice acting (sub) is very fitting, especially for the main characters. The second ending in this season is quite wonderful.

Characters: 8/10
Overall, the characters are unique and well-written. They are challenged appropriately and make decisions based on the story, which tends to be something that anime of this genre lacks. Many of the characters are captivating, and the viewer wants to learn more about them. A relative weakness is that the main character is initially a pushover, which leads to a variety of challenges throughout the story. Even putting aside future seasons, it’s worth noting that Akane is written to be conflicted and grow, and she does grow a little throughout the story, but this is one of the stories that utilizes the side characters and antagonist for more engagement than the main character. Akane grows to about 7/10 of the potential the viewer would want or expect in a main character. Nonetheless, the dichotomy between Ko and Akane’s styles is an excellent juxtaposition throughout the story. Wholly, the characters are interesting and make decisions for themselves, which makes the story even more worthwhile.

Enjoyment: 7/10
I did enjoy this story and the characters. I wouldn’t say it was revolutionary, but it was fun to watch, and it did explore some intriguing themes. It is probably the best anime in this genre, that I have seen thus far, at least.

Mixed Feelings

This title is not bad, I watched only the first season, I don't want to continue watching. The anime has a lot of references to various creative figures, quotes from books and their titles, of course I'm glad that the writer is literary oriented and I like the variety of these references, but the story is a bit long, after watching some episodes you feel their filler, the plot tropes are interesting within the framework of anime of this time. As a result, I recommend it to everyone, the anime really stands out from the other hundreds, but with some nuances.

I watched psycho-pass because it was recommended for fans of death note. A big difference between psycho-pass and death note is that psycho-pass is more sci-fi, while death note is more fantasy. However, what I liked about death note was that there was ONE fantasy element (the death note, which yes, did come with the shinigamis) that was placed in an otherwise normal and real-life-like world. I tend to like anime that show characters in a real, non-fantasy life, like Monster and Perfect Blue, and Death Note was amazing even though it had that fantasy element. However, in psycho-pass, the story is way to sci-fi ... to where things don't feel realistic at all. Also, it's just way worse. I honestly don't know how people could say it is BETTER than death note. Absolutely not.

Story - 7
Starting off strong. The story isn't that bad. The sci-fi element is actually interesting, and the first half of the series includes some thrilling and exciting situations. However, the overall story doesn't feel that special, but I think this is because the characters who drove it weren't that great. With boring protagonists and boring antagonists, any story is bound to fail.

Art - 6
It's okay, not my favorite. Don't like how some characters have big anime style eyes and others have normal looking eyes.

Sound - 5
Not comparable to Death Note AT ALL! Death Note is full of bangers! The music in psycho-pass doesn't feel as hype. There was only one track I really liked, and it's not during a hype moment at all, but during the interview with the woman and the cyborg guy.

Characters - 3
Here is where psycho-pass comes crashing down. The characters are either boring or annoying. That is NOT a good combination. Our MC basically has no actual personality traits. I don't know any of her interests outside of her job. She is just so boring and predictable.
Our MC's colleagues are mostly boring. There is maybe one or two that I actually liked, but they don't get a lot of screen time. The rest are either boring or annoyingly dramatic.
The psycho-pass team is so boring I was kinda rooting for the antagonist just because he seemed kinda chill. He is also boring, and I don't understand any of his motivations, but hey, at least he had a cool plan, which indicates he does have a brain capable of thoughts, so I rooted for him. But I knew I wouldn't care either way what happened at the end since all these characters are so lifeless.

Enjoyment - 5
Psycho-pass was fun to watch at first. The concept was interesting. It was thrilling for a bit. Some parts of episodes were good. But without good characters, an anime will fail. So since I didn't feel anything for any of these characters, and wasn't even motivated to watch season 2 to see the characters more, my enjoyment was little.

Overall - 6

Look. Psycho pass does have a great concept. And it can be fun to watch if you just need something. But do not think this will be like death note, and don't watch it if you are picking between other amazing psychological shows like Paranoia Agent, Code Geass, or Monster.
