Synopsis

In the town of Kamisu 66, 12-year-old Saki Watanabe has just awakened to her psychic powers and is relieved to rejoin her friends—the mischievous Satoru Asahina, the shy Mamoru Itou, the cheerful Maria Akizuki, and Shun Aonuma, a mysterious boy whom Saki admires—at Sage Academy, a special school for psychics. However, unease looms as Saki begins to question the fate of those unable to awaken to their powers, and the children begin to get involved with secretive matters such as the rumored Tainted Cats said to abduct children.

Shinsekai yori tells the unique coming-of-age story of Saki and her friends as they journey to grow into their roles in the supposed utopia. Accepting these roles, however, might not come easy when faced with the dark and shocking truths of society, and the impending havoc born from the new world.

Shinsekai Yori is a rare thing: an utterly unique anime.

It's hard to place it in a genre, but dark fantasy and horror are probably the best bets.

It sets up a unique and disturbing retro-future with totalitarian elements out of Brave New Worĺd or 1984. The classical Japanese viĺlage aesthetic is at odds with the constant feeling of creeping unease that pervades the show.

Mostly it is a show you experience, alternately fascinated and terrified. In the end you will feel disturbed and uncomfortable.

It isn't everyone's cup of tea. Action is intermittent. The characters can at times feel distant, yet they still feel very real ...

Mixed Feelings
Shinsekai Yori is a slow-burn anime with a decent payoff by the end of the series. However, for some reason, I find myself unable to rate the series any higher than a 7, and upon further assessment, there are some faults in Shinsekai Yori. Foremost, its characters are lacking, and I didn't connect to any of them. Some argue that the show is more about telling themes and ideas. Yet, bland characters can be unengaging to viewers such as myself and make you ask, "Why should I care about the outcome of this story?"

Moreover, I found the animation wasn't the best out there. In one ...

The plot is obvious because you have all the key information given to you very early. The following 18 episodes are just a whole village of adults totally unable to connect 2 dots despite spending the entirety of their time doing exposition. You just want to shake the hell out of them until a spark turns their brains on.

They have litterally god-like omniscient dogs running around their village that contains all the knowedge of humanity. Maybe we should use that? Ask the appropriate question? Nah.
If you dont intend to take advantage of that, why would you run the risk of this knowedge falling into bad ...
