Synopsis

After warping light-years away from Earth, the spacecraft Macross carries a city of civilians and soldiers back home. They continuously fight off the threat of the Zentradi and Meltrandi, giant alien races with whom humanity wages war.

During a battle, the Macross transforms into a mecha operated by fighter pilot Hikaru Ichijou. Thrust into a number of hardships, Hikaru grows close to the city's idol Minmay Lynn. As their relationship develops, however, it is viewed unfavorably by others due to Minmay's status and popularity.

With war raging on and the state of Earth unknown, Hikaru and his fellow soldiers fight on against their mysterious enemies. Throughout the bloodshed, Hikaru and Minmay attempt to keep hold of their feelings for one another. Minmay pours her heart into her music, which may just turn out to be the key to finding peace.

It is important to preface my thoughts with that I understand anyone who hates this movie for how horribly sexist it is even at a time when the space opera anime already had female characters who were not presented in this way (e.g. Patlabor, Gundam, Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu) but it exists to me as super interesting piece of art with extremely respectable qualities.

Leaving the obvious aside, the animation is amazing, even today it is a timeless masterpiece in the visual aspect, with a great choreographic handling of space fights, natural movements, everything that concerns Minmay is visually amazing. The same goes for the artistic direction ... of the film, I am very fascinated by the colors chosen as the main pallette, the alien architecture, the clothing of the characters, all that is undeniably part of its charm as a masterpiece that it is.

Also the musical direction seems incredible to me, bordering more on a musical than a common narrative, with incredible songs like "Do you remember love?"accompanying scenes in a masterful way, rarely does a movie with so many insert songs manage to excite me absolutely every time they sound.

However, what I liked the most about the movie and also its main message is how interested it is with how culture is the greatest force that exists, that the ancestral object is not a weapon that can defeat the aliens, but it is a song.
Something that makes them remember that they were cultural beings and that life knowing only war is absolute garbage, that what makes us live is art, as this is the pillar of civilization and the only thing that will last the day we are no more. A transcendent testimony of existence itself.

As a last note I would say that the only reason I decided to watch it was because I played 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim recently and it takes a lot from Macross only that 13 Sentinels seems to me a work that treats its characters much better and does not fall into everything that I did not like about Macross.

Es importante comenzar mis pensamientos con eso, entiendo a cualquiera que odie esta película por lo horriblemente sexista que es, incluso en un momento en que el anime de la ópera espacial ya tenía personajes femeninos que no se presentaban de esta manera (por ejemplo, Patlabor, Gundam, Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu), pero existe para mí como una obra de arte súper interesante con cualidades extremadamente respetables.

Dejando a un lado lo obvio, la animación es asombrosa, incluso hoy en día es una obra maestra atemporal en el aspecto visual, con un gran manejo coreográfico de peleas espaciales, movimientos naturales, todo lo que concierne a Minmay es visualmente asombroso. Lo mismo ocurre con la dirección artística de la película, me fascinan mucho los colores elegidos como paleta principal, la arquitectura alienígena, la vestimenta de los personajes, todo eso es innegablemente parte de su encanto como obra maestra que es.

También la dirección musical me parece increíble, rayando más en un musical que en una narrativa común,con canciones increíbles como " ¿Recuerdas el amor?"acompañando escenas de una manera magistral, rara vez una película con tantas canciones insertadas logra emocionarme absolutamente cada vez que suenan.

Sin embargo, lo que más me gustó de la película y también de su mensaje principal es lo interesado que está en cómo la cultura es la fuerza más grande que existe, que el objeto ancestral no es un arma que pueda derrotar a los alienígenas, sino que es una canción.
Algo que les haga recordar que eran seres culturales y que la vida conociendo solo la guerra es una absoluta basura, que lo que nos hace vivir es el arte, ya que este es el pilar de la civilización y lo único que durará el día que dejemos de serlo. Un testimonio trascendente de la existencia misma.

Como última nota diría que la única razón por la que decidí verla fue porque jugué a 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim recientemente y toma mucho de Macross solo que 13 Sentinels me parece una obra que trata mucho mejor a sus personajes y no cae en todo lo que no me gusta de Macross.

Mixed Feelings

Macross is a classic mecha series that's surprisingly suits well with the musical dramas settings on it.

PLOT:
In the fictional modern world of 2009, Humans were engaged in war with a giant male aliens in which was called Zentraedi and their female counterpart Meltrandi. These two types of aliens were also warring each other. At one time when a singer called Lynn Minmay doing her concert, the Zentraedi began their invasion to humans, and she almost die during the incident but being saved by a young mecha pilot called Hikaru Ichijo, in which he unintentionally saw her struggling when he retreated to the Macross, humans mothership. ... They soon get trapped somewhere at the mothership and was founded later. After then, Hikaru begins his romantic journey as well as his war to defeat the giant aliens. The premise was pretty good, combining musical romance with mechs fighting. The pacing, considering this is a movie reboot of a 36 episodes series which will probably be rushed, is acceptable. And the ending was also pretty well done, although not as good as my expectations. So overall, it was pretty good one.

CHARACTERS:
This movie have so many characters introduced considering the duration so well, most of them aren't well developed, only the protagonist seems to be quite three dimensional (or maybe between two and three dimensional.) The characters are somewhat relatable for me. I'd say overall the characterization was slightly better than average.

SOUNDS AND VISUALS:
This is probably the best part of this movie. The art was very fluid, the action was drawn good, and it surprisingly also has a great atmosphere, but keep in mind that I also consider the year of it's release too, it's brilliant for a 80-s film. As for the sound, what can you expect more for musical film? Lynn song was beautiful IMO, and the sound effects during the actions are also very good.

ENJOYMENT:
This is probably the worst part of my review. Not that I didn't enjoy old shows, but rather like I'm not very interested in mechas, NTR scenes, and high dose of sexism, even more than nowadays ecchis or harems (I didn't really like the idea of overly sexist or feminist story tbh since I'm an egalitarian.) But other than all that thing that turning me off I pretty enjoy the other aspects. The fact that I haven't watched the 36 episodes of the series may be also take account to some of my discontent to this show, so I'm going to say sorry for you guys Macross fans. If you're a mecha fan and okay with old shows and sexism, I pretty recommend this show to be watched tbh.
