After facing massive destruction from a devastating war, the city Olympus has become the last stronghold as the center of command for the world. In order to protect the city from a group of terrorists known as the Argonauts, former LAPD SWAT member, Deunan Knotts, runs special military forces consisting of Biroids (cloned humans) and her cyborg partner Brialeos. Knotts must protect the city at all costs but is met with difficulties when Al Ceides, the Argonaut leader thought to be dead, resurfaces and causes problems.
Appleseed XIII falls short comparing it to the movies, it's every bit political and action packed as any previous anime or movies but slower. In a way they made this more into a love story, it is extremely repetitive almost every episode repeats "the story so far" it feels like almost a quarter of the time you'r re-watching the dialog's and scenes you already saw, and the plot holes can't talk about it because i don't want to give spoilers but there is so much stuff with no answers.
The animation wasn't disgraceful, just distracting, world wise it's good but character's wise it looks bad,
the action scenes were good enough i guess, i'm not a big fan of CGI since almost everytime it looks bad, rush or cheap, so don't take my word on this because you need to see to know if you like the animation style.
If you are not a huge fan of Appleseed franchise skip this, and watch the remix movies instead, since is the same but takes you less time.
I'll start with the animation. It's horrible, there's just no way I can sugar-coat it. It's fine for robots and cyborgs but it fails to deliver and properly express human emotions in both the humans and bioroids alike, not to mention the out of sync speech at some points. And seriously what's up with the ancient mythological sculptures and drawings? I mean I know they are of some significance to the story but repeating them scene after scene makes it really annoying to watch.
Now, about the plot, it's quite interesting and that's the only thing that made me keep watching it. The unshakable bond between
Briareos and Deunan being put to test, the robots malfunctioning to show human-like emotions, bioroids doing something they're not programmed to do, betrayal, search for eden, man vs machines.. all makes it up for a good action packed sci-fi. So, overall a good show and I really enjoyed my time watching it.
Just a quick review because there isn't one here yet,
I had high hopes for this series yet it fails on the same issues as the second movie...
The Cell shaded stuff/ci/visuals work well with all the technology but not with the human side of the story,
Their weapons and suits all look great, the action is well paced BUT
(be aware that I have only seen the first 2 episodes)
the characters and plot are kiddy grade
The cgi falls apart in the 'normal scenes' (even childish at times) and the plot is forcefully inserted (for example in the first episode we see how Briareos and Deunan had their
terrible accident and search for their eden but no emotional connection whatsoever
So I will continue to watch but to me only the first movie had a good mix of story and visuals , this series (up until now) and the second movie are just a showcase of Shirow Masamune's talent
This is just for quick reading others will update and have better reviews
