Dungeon Meshi

Adventuring knight Laios Touden leads a small party through a seemingly endless dungeon, a subterranean maze full of dangerous monsters and precarious traps. Through the use of advanced magic, an explorer can sometimes be resurrected, allowing them to learn from past mistakes and give traversing the dungeon another go. However, when a powerful dragon eats Falin, Laios' spellcasting sister, she sends her brother and his companions back to the beginning to save them from permanent ends.

Though strapped for cash and equipment, Laios resolves to fight his way through the dungeon and rescue Falin before she can be digested by the dragon. Despite some of Laios' allies abandoning him, two remain by his side: elven mage Marcille Donato and halfling locksmith Chilchuck Tims. Due to their lack of funds, the party faces the daunting prospect of starving before being able to complete their quest. However, they find salvation in Senshi, a dwarven warrior with a penchant for cooking and safely eating defeated monsters.

With Senshi's culinary expertise, Laios and his companions struggle through the dungeon while learning about gourmet dining—and each other—along the way.

When this show started airing, I had zero interest in it. It's looked like it was just cozy cooking and fantasy aesthetics with no substance, just another seasonal fad. So often mediocre seasonal anime go viral. I didn't watch this until long after it finished airing, because my friends turned it on while hanging out at my house. I was quickly pulled in.

The show does have a sense of coziness to it. They cook at least once in every single episode if I remember correctly, and you should be sure you have a snack when you watch it because you will get hungry. But it ... has much more to it than I initially expected. The characters seem one-note and tropey at first glance, but their relationships with each other lead to interesting develops as the show goes on. Falin and Laios, Marcille and Falin, Marcille and Laios, and even Chilchuck and Senshi are so satisfying to watch interact. Even the dynamics between the main cast and supporting characters are interesting.

Dungeon Meshi excels at its character interactions but also introduces moral dilemmas to the viewer. Some characters react to the concept of eating dungeon monsters like it's cannibalism. But where is the line drawn between what is okay and not okay to eat? Why is eating beef or chicken okay, but monsters aren't okay to eat. A similar but different moral dilemma is introduced later that somewhat mirrors this one, but I won't get into it for the sake of not spoiling. But Dungeon Meshi consistently explores the relationship between taboo and morality.

Onto visuals, it does have a very typical fantasy dungeon aesthetic, but Trigger did a great job at capturing the manga's art style. This is definitely the least Trigger show Trigger has ever made since it's their first time doing a manga adaptation, but I think they did a great job. The animation is great and there are certain scenes where Trigger's signature style bleeds through.

I am looking forward to season 2 coming out.

Mixed Feelings

It's really hard to tell if this show can be recommended to anyone. It has a Dr. Stone kind of theme, and it's definitely good. But other than being good, there's nothing to it. It basically went stagnant after few episodes. It's all about eating, eating, and eating, and that's it. Nothing happened.

The art style feels makes you feel like watching a cartoon show. It's kind of mixed in between. The characters are just weird in general kind of sense.

So...

If you like food or silly comedies, then this anime is definitely for you. But if you don't, other anime exist

The show has some redeeming qualities, and the characters are good, but frankly (despite knowing what it's name is) the show is dragged down by all the monster cooking. Just slows down the story most of the time, and it stops being funny pretty fast.
In addition, it's so weird how casual and not in a hurry the characters are 90% of the time despite them being on a time limit to save their friend. They have to save someone with like a month but they almost NEVER act like they are in a hurry. Just makes the overall story ... feel not important

The show would have been better without the cooking and characters just focusing on helping their friend as an adventure story. Would have been much better as the dungeon and adventurer side of the show is pretty good.
