Awakening her dormant abilities as a devil one day, Yuuko Yoshida aka Shadow Mistress Yuuko, is entrusted with the mission to defeat the Light clan's shrine maiden, a magical girl, by her ancestor Lilith. Yuuko meets magical girl Momo Chiyoda through her classmate Anri Sada, and challenges her to a duel, but loses quickly due to her lack of strength.
Since then, Yuuko has struggled with her role as a devil and her duel with Momo, and borrowed help from her regularly. However, by a strange coincidence, Yuuko also weakens Momo by taking away her power to cooperate in protecting the peace of Tama city.
This is a show that it's not for the faint of heart, unless I'm kidding you that it's a parody show instead of the more serious kind. GOTCHA!
Out of the J.C.Staff shows this season, this is a rightful 2nd place (obviously) behind the long-awaited DanMachi Season 2, omitting the full-on trope that is the isekai genre with the standout MILF. Oh pfft.
In a context, this show can be dumbed down in similarity towards Gabriel DropOut, just cut away with an angel and a demon, and have another fire shots at each other in ways that its execution is almost that. Yuko (or Shamiko as lazy-asses
would put it) the demon girl is like Satania, constantly taken in (NOT bullied) by the angel Momo Chiyoda, whose presence shines like an angel, but in retrospect, is neither an example of that. Or as how I would put it, another Raphiel, kind-hearted but devilishly manipulative. Other than all these, look forward to their character interactions as well.
It's been awhile for J.C.Staff to touch upon comedic SoL shows, the last I remember being Last Period last year and Urara Meirochou the year before (and if you count the Saiki Psy-nan short series too). They're not the best studio for SoL stuff, but then again much can be said for any studio who does such stuff (which is increasingly becoming a rarity nowadays).
But for this I shall not let it pass-by, and neither should you, if you just want a chill-pill towards the end of the week (TGIT or TGIF), this'll do.
Simply put, Machikado Mazoku is heartwarming slice of life with a spin - which is magic girl parody.
Sound and animation are average, they don`t stand out in good or bad way and when they are needed to deliver punch line, they do just that.
Since it is slice of life show, it`s episodic, but some overall story is present event though it misses a proper goal.
As a character driven comedy, it doesn`t disappoint in this regard. From all the possibilities (terrible people, weirdos, stupid v straight man etc.) it choses tragic characters. And makes them adorable. Main duo is ex-child soldier with ptsd living
alone almost unable to take proper care of herself and kind, gullible, weak girl, who just wants to get along with everybody, tasked to fight the former to escape misfortune and poverty.
They are surrounded by other incompetent characters clumsily trying to get on with life or reach some vague goal. Overall message of this anime seems to be kindness and not giving up in face of your own incapability.
Art style is a great fit, since it supports the aforementioned cuteness and positivity.
Machikado Mazoku is a great example of uplifting comedy that doesn`t take anything seriously. There is a tendency to compare it to Gabriel DropOut, but thats more because of the setting (with this one you feel pity and need to support the characters, in Gab most of them are just adorable a-holes).
This wasn't on my list when the season started, but I saw some clips on Twitter and Facebook and decided to watch. It did not disappoint.
To keep this short, I'm just going to address the rating categories above.
Story - Pretty generic in my opinion. But sometimes that's ok.
Art - Decent with the recent anime trends in this genre.
Sound - Background OST suitable. OP&ED are good.
Character - The banter between Shamiko and Momo is enjoyable to watch. This also extends to other characters' interactions.
Enjoyment - It's simply enjoying to watch every week to relieve stress.
Note that this series is meant for people who like this
genre (i.e. SoL and comedy). This review is written as such. I also tend to give favourable reviews.
This anime is really underrated. I always love this kind of anime. Anime that makes me feel good. Just pure comedy and slice of life. It is so fun to watch it.
What I like from this anime is the art very suit with the mood that anime has. It is so colorful. The animation sometimes goes to "chibi style" to deliver the comedy, which is good. The sound is very support the anime, such as the sound effect to make the comedy scene more funny.
Then again, I love every character on this anime. They are very adorable and I can't hate them. I love every
moment, there is no serious moment so far, full of comedy with kawaii and adorables character. Highly recommended from me.
