Rather than the majority of the people on MAL, I try to be reasonable when giving a show a rate, rather than giving a totally biased score right away, basing in nothing else. So, my rates are gave using the below chart, giving to every aspect its deserved score. Or not, because it really depends of what interpretation and impression I have. My scores still biased anyway, because bias is something hard to avoid.
Just don't think I'm a soulless watcher, and that I despise the creator's effort. The fact is there are the really outstanding shows, that managed to do a great work in their issues, and there are the common and bad shows, that are nothing than a selling crap. This last ones, at least, are great reference material to balance tastes and start recognizing shit and gold.
OK, enough of my babble.

Story - 400
The main topic of every show. It only need to tie itself, using every resource it got.

Concept and Themes - 20
This is where dog bites. What do the story bring up to us? What do the story pokes with? The most creative or rare the concept is, the biger is its score.

Plot - 250
Divided in two topics:

- Execution - 100: How the show gone through and how the elements of its line were used. Start, middle, end and all events are included on this topic.
- Concept Utilization - 200: How concept was applied along the story and how it acts in the plot and whole story. Did the show used the concept as central nail of plot? How it was used? The most interesting and unique takes are always welcome.

Setting - 80
Is where the story takes place. Don't matter if it is totally creative, only needs to get us inside the world. Atmosphere is included in this topic.

The reason I give a great wheight on concept is because concept itself is what makes a show characteristic and valuable. Distinction from other is great, and that's why I somehow hate many of modern medieval-setting titles.

Characters - 400
The other main issue of a show, who drive the watcher all along the show. If these are bad, then the show is bad, in its essence.

Dialogue, Speech and Interaction - 100
It proves what characters are made of. If the author domines dialogue, then he/she domines its character, making the spelling not to be pointless and show the characteristics and attitudes of a character. Of course, I'll remove points if the much characters were only stock archetypes, with no minimal change.

Importance to plot - 50
Supporting characters are for sure important, but if there are too much secondary chars, these can overshadow the main ones, making us not to give the proper importance to the very important ones.
And a main character that makes no shit the entire show isn't good either.

Importance to concept - 100
Chars are who drives shows, and, consequentially, plot, then execution. The characters are the ones who need to develop the concept and make it has an application in the real life, even if it be directly or if it be symbolized.

Development OR/AND Deepening - 100
The most important topic to a char. Development is what makes us see on what shit the main char gone, and make we have any kind or bond with them.

Voice actors - 50
You know what I mean, and I value more actors who made a more natural voice in such char than the actors who did a more "dramatic" voice.

Notice that I don't consider "characterization", since character creativity died long ago. The dialogue is better, since it show the essence of the chars, how they interact with other chars and their surroundings.

Art and Visuals - 100
Animations rely in the visual part to get the watcher on the story. But great visuals doesn't mean the anime is great too. (Isn't, Guilty Crown?)
The art in manga is actually very important, because there's no other way manga will pass it's happenings for you.

Animation - 50
There is no much to say out of you already know. The flow and sequences only need to suit the show. If it lag my Wii, probably is great.

Picturing - 25
Angles and shots are important to give the mood of the show. It only don't need to be a mess.

Artwork - 25
The more unique or/and clear is the artwork, more points. Allegories and visual metaphors get the extra 25 points.

Nothing out of ordinary. I give less points to the Art topic, since story and characters are WAY more important.

Sound - 100
it is a great resource to get you in a certain mood. This topic rarely achieves 100,

Original soundtrack - 50
The soundtrack includes OP, ED and inserted music. It need to be great enough to pass the feel of the show (and be downloadable).

Sound effects and BGM - 50

--

Then, we have:

Story = 400
Char = 400
Art = 100
Sound = 100

Everything goes to a maximum score of 1000.
