Fall 2012

Here are my thoughts on the Fall 2012 Anime season

Fall 2012 had so many highlights as compared to the other seasons I've watched so far. Let's get things started

Shinsekai yori many people decided to drop this anime because of some unwanted "service" in episode 8. However, it turned out to be much better than expected. I should warn you that this anime has a lot of talking that covers many political and social aspects of its society. This means that there's going to be a lot of talking, and you are going to have to pay attention at all times to understand what's going on. Overall, the ending was very satisfying, but the middle part of Shinsekai Yori was weak, and the pacing for me was pretty terrible. Every time I would get into the anime, a time skip would occur and that would take me out again. The storyline itself was indeed interesting.

K had a concept and storyline that fail really short of expectation. They really didn't do anything to explain what was going on, and it often felt as they neglected many of the characters. The ending was ok, but they needed to expand on everything. It seemed that the people behind K wanted to be original. However, in the end it felt like they borrowed a ton of ideas from other anime and threw them into a big mixing pot. One thing I will say is that K did have outstanding animation.

Btooom! As more game centered anime begin to come out of the industry this one has to be one of the most unique. Btooom! had an ok storyline and characters, but one thing it did well was keep me entertained with plot twist, action packed animation, sound and an ending, although predictable, that was very enjoyable.

Code:Breaker On the surface Code:Breaker seemed to be a great sounding anime, and then you realize how poorly somethings where. For instance the main character Sakurakouji, Sakura is so shallow that it hurts watching her in every episode. Character development is pretty much dead in this series, and other little things cause this anime to derail big time. It's one of the biggest low point in Fall 2012.

Sukitte Ii na yo. This was a pretty great romance anime when it started, but it started to fall of in the middle, and that ending was so terrible. I don't know why they decided to use such a cliche' one. The characters where developed pretty well, animation was above average, and I liked the ending theme "slow dance" by Suneohair. It had a really uplifting melody too it. With that flaw out of the way, this anime is still worth a watch.

Jormungand: Perfect Order If you thought the 1st season was awesome wait until you see the second. Everything is turned up. That means we get more action, more plot twists, better character development, and did I say MORE ACTION? This anime should definitely be on your watch list if you enjoy shooters, and it even looks like we may get a Season 3 :D.

Psycho-Pass Now if you thought Jormungand: PO was great then Psycho-Pass will blow your socks off. If I could rate in decimals I would give this an 8.5 easily. It's not quite worth a 9, but yeah what can you do. It doesn't have as many gunfights or explosion as Jormungand, but it makes up that with a more interesting storyline. It's also not as predictable either and character development is ever so much better. In my opinion the overall experience is just so much more realistic. It was easily the highlight of the season.

Robitics;Notes This anime is the biggest disappointment of the year. I had pretty medium expectations for it, but it ended up falling way below them. If you loved Steins;Gate then sorry you most likely won't like this anime. It seems like the producers have a miss and then hit ratio. Chaos;Head was atrociously bad, Steins;Gate is a masterpiece, and then Robitics;Notes that is in between the two. The whole storyline is predictable and boring. The characters were forgettable and it just wasn't enjoyable. Overall it was a pretty average anime. Shame.

Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun Please Read my review

Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo As you can see I've watched 3 rom/com anime this season and this one is the best. I honestly thought at first it was the weakest between Tonari, and Sukitte Ii na yo. But as the show went on it grew on me. What I noticed is Sukitte Ii na yo is the serious romance anime with few funny moments, Tonari is in between, and Sakurasou is all out fun lol. To me it was far more enjoyable than the others, and that ending was so much better. Hopefully we see a season 2.

Initial D: 5th Stage I'm still finishing this up, but all I can say is if you enjoyed Stages 1- 4 then you are going to enjoy this one as well.

Overall I'm very pleased to how the fall season turned out. It had many great anime to watch. Psycho Pass, Sakuraso no Pet na Kanojo, Jorumgand: Perfect Order, Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, Shinsekai yori, Btooom, Sukitte Ii na yo are all must watches this season. K, Robotic;Notes; and Code:Breaker you can pretty much skip but since I gave them 2 of them 6's it's up for you to decide on that. They kind of left me hanging. Since Initial D isn't over I can't say much but I'm pretty sure that it will also be in the must watch category. Otherwise this season was awesome.

Winter 2011-2012

Here are my thoughts on the Winter 2011-2012 Anime season

Read my review for Fate/Prototype. If you want to know what the Fate Series was supposed to be like even before Fate/Stay Night then this ones for you. I just wish the creator would make it into a full series.

Rinne no Lagrange This anime reminded me of Eureka 7. Very similar animation, and characters. It was pretty lighthearted, but the ending was very weak to me. This has a lot of potential (that was pretty much not used in Season 2).

Senki Zesshou SymphogearPretty terrible anime. Weak everything, and I can't believe that this is getting a season 2. It doesn't need it, and didn't need a season 1 either.

Recorder to Randoseru Do I watched this purely out of curiosity and found it to be interesting at first. But then they started reusing jokes...in the first 3 episodes...in a 3 minute show.

Highschool DXD People rated this high because of the ecchi, but the storyline is horrendous. No development, and it changes about half way through the anime to something entirely different. Would be fine if the anime was 24 ep+ but c'mon, and that fact that it was trying to be funny was an insult.

Poyopoyo Kansatsu Nikki I like this anime. I'm surprised it lasted 52 episodes lol. This is just one of those anime that is meant for people to kick back to and enjoy. I loved how they pretty much had fresh ideas every episode although they still reused some. But overall it was short and enjoyable.

Brave 10 I like these ninja anime, but this one gave the feeling of idiocy. Once again we see an anime start off ok, but then the ending messed up everything COMPLETELY. It made no sense and was retarded. I can see if they were going to make a second season, but it just ended with no hint at all. Even the anime itself didn't hint of one, which leads to a "what that's it" moment. Wasteful

Read my Another It is a very good mystery/horror anime, but the characters (outside the main ones) need some work, and also any spoiler will ruin the show.

Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou I love sunrise for their Gundam Series so I tried this and found out that it was the funniest this season. The jokes where pretty hilarious and remind me of how high school kind of was lol. I hope this comes back entitle Daily Lives of College Boys because it is a pretty great comedy series.

Mouretsu Pirates Another terrible anime that was nothing short of boring. The CGI used was miserable to look at and really what's the point of being a legal pirate? There's no fun in that. The storyline was such a yawn that I honestly don't remember what it was about, and how is this getting a movie?

Black★Rock Shooter (TV) I remember watching the original OVA and thought to myself that this would make one awesome tv series. I was pretty wrong. The TV series took all the interesting and mysterious aspects of the OVA and through them away in favor of a generic back story, uninspiring characters, and terrible animation.

Read my review for Steins;Gate: Oukoubakko no Poriomania it's an OVA that actually adds to the storyline.

Natsume Yuujinchou Shi I actually never heard of the Natsume series and saw the scores on MAL and decided to watch. The first season was very nice, the second was about the same, the third season was awesome, and this season is the best to date. I love how each shifts focus to another central aspect of the anime, and gives us very useful information to the series. The characters are developed so well, and I love the animation (as you seen from my Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun). This animation is pretty heart warming too.

Nisemonogatari I watched the prequel to this and loved the story telling aspects, and how it presented itself. However, in Nisemongatari they killed it for me with all the fanservice, and gave it a storyline that wasn't as good as the prequels. At least the retained the same great animation, and music. I hope that the prequels( Kizumonogatari and Nekomonogatari: Kuro) series are better.

Overall Natsume Yuujinchou Shi was the best and I would highly recommend it. Winter had some pretty good ones to watch like Another, and was a ok season.

Summer 2012

Here are my thoughts on the Summer 2012 Anime season

Arcana Famglia Whew. I thought that this anime was going to full with fight scenes and would be similar to D.GrayMan (as how they had the organization not storyline) but boy was I wrong. I hate when an anime doesn't do anything within the first 10 episodes, and only the last 1 to 2 tell the whole storyline. It's a shame. After watching the final ep it went from a 6 to a 3. As you can see I really loathe horrid endings.

Muv-Luv: Total Eclispe The anime wasn't good either. There was a glimmer of hope in episode 2, but after that it continued to go downhill to the point were the storyline wasn't important and that even the characters in the anime itself forget that their main/most important enemies were aliens trying to destroy the world. They pretty much replaced that with a bunch of crappy fanservice. Just bad all together.

Hagure Yuusha no Estetica The storyline is actually pretty decent, and the main character was ok, but to me he was a tad bit overpowered. The show itself was pretty funny too.

Sword Art Online Just like GC before it SAO is the most controversial show of this season. For me the first 3 episodes are pretty much disjointed, and didn't really flow with the rest. I hated how they would introduce characters in an episodes, then at the end of it they died. It was pretty pointless. The pacing in this anime was terribly jumpy too, and finally the second half was so much worse than the first part.

Dakara Boku wa, H ga Dekinai I watched this after DXD and I have to say that story wise it is slightly better, but it still has the same problems that marred DXD, and that's crappy character development, below average art/animation, Terrible sound, and a mediocre overall experience.

Rinne no Lagrange Season 2 Oh RNL you had so much potential. So why didn't you use any of it in the second season? You didn't have any more character development for the main characters, and didn't really do much else.

Oda Nobuna no Yabou Finished This one surprised me on how good it was. Very great storyline, very nice animation, good sound, and the characters were done pretty well too. For me it was the highlight of this season even though it's fanservice did get into the way at some points.

Read my review for Guilty Crown: Lost Christmas. To me this OVA showed a lot more promise than GC ever did.

Kyousougiga (2012) This prequel/sequel is confusing. I'm not sure what each episode represents because A) it is far too short, and B) things happen at random. In my review for the prequel I suggested that people should read "Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There" and it still holds true for this prequel/sequel because not a lot of information is given. I may review this at one point

Overall: for me Summer 2012 was very bland, and was the worst season I have watched so far. The only anime that I can recommend is Oda Nobuna No Yabou. SAO couldn't live up to the hype, and I was expecting more from Kyousougiga. GC: Lost Christmas was just a teaser, although a good teaser and the rest weren't worthwhile enough.

Spring 2012

Here are my thoughts on the Spring 2011 Anime season

Ozuma: I have honestly really nothing to say about it. To me everything was far below average. The storyline doesn't make much sense, and the ending REALLY didn't make sense. I thought it was going to be a great adventure anime, but in the end it was nothing more than a boring piece of work.

Accel World: Once this anime came out we seen a host of game related anime released. Accel World started to become boring for me after the first quarter of the anime aired. I didn't see any character development, and that main character was pretty annoying for me. He never really grew up and kept whining. I will say that the fights, and animation were great.

Zetman: This anime could have been so much more. People say that the manga is much better. However, as you can see from my profile I rarely read them. The first part of the storyline is very disjointed from the middle to the end, and they failed to really explain what happens with anything during the show. But Zetman turned into Batman at the end haha.

Recorder to Randoseru De: Not much to say. The jokes were pretty much the same lame jokes as the last season, and it was boring. Don't know why this got a 2nd season and is getting a 3rd season.

Sankarea: This one had a lot of potential but ending up falling a tad short. I don't know why but most anime nowadays either have a great ending or a bad ending, and this was the latter. It well just ended with no mention of a second season. Hopefully we see one though. Overall it was funny, had above average art, animation, and sound.

Jormungand: I was waiting for an anime like this every since I got internet lol. Nice and action packed shooter. But problems arise in when they don't even tell us how many bullets people have left haha. They just shoot and shoot and shoot. I love the OST Time to Rock and Roll :D. Jormungand was so great.

Tasogare Otome x Amnesia: The animation and soundtrack were superb. The characters were ok, and the storyline wasn't all that good. The ending was like huh? because the main character explained why she was still there, and then they finished whatever she was supposed to do, but in the end she was still there. However, I will say this also needs a 2nd season.

Eureka 7 Ao: Really? 8 years and this is what we get. This is a sequel that Eureka 7 didn't need.

Read my review of Fate/Zero 2nd Season it's just as great as the first season.

Hyouka: Ok this anime was very interesting for the very first half for me. The mystery of Hyouka kept me intrigued because no one knew what it was. However, after we found out what it was the anime became so average. It's ashamed that it wasted all that build up on an average plot. At least the characters where for the most part likable.

With the conclusion of this season. Once again Fate/Zero stole the show. However, I can't but mention how E7 AO was so terrible at the end. It wasn't the bad when watching, but we all should have know that it was going to suck when the creators took a break for 2 months to make the ending. Oh well I guess. The rest of the shows ranged from great to again decent.

Fall 2011

Here are my thoughts on the Fall 2011 Anime season

Mobile Suit Gundam Age: is one of the worst Gundam series I have ever watched. It is a great concept, but to be honest the only character that was decent was the Flit. What made me laugh is that many of the main characters became so useless at the end, or just dropped out of existence. Also I believed it was dragged out for far too long and can't believe it didn't get cancelled at episode 30.

Persona 4: The Animation: is one of the best adaptions of a game turned anime. However, this one needed a lot more episodes. The pacing is very awkward for me, and the animation/art is an eye sore. For some reason the artist behind the show chose the weirdest skin tone color ever. But it did remain truthful to the PS2 game it was made after.

Guilty Crown: is the most controversial anime from Fall 2011, and I could see why. It had a promising premise, great animation, great sound, and seemly great characters. But as the episodes went on the show got worse. The storyline and characters became a mess. The fact that they had to make a recap of the first 11 episodes "Guilty Crown Kiseki: Reassortment" shows this. The production values started to suffer as well. My main gripe with GC was the ending, and how bad it is. It shows that even if a person has the money it doesn't mean they can create an awesome work.

Mirai Nikki (TV): is one great ride for me until it got to the end. This psychological thriller had me entertained every single week. But that lackluster ending is just terrible. The only reason why I didn't give it a 7 is because it had nice pacing, pretty good characters, and the music.

Final thoughts: Fall 2011 from what I watched this anime season had 1 gems, and that was the awesome Fate/Zero that was perfect in almost every way. Mirai Nikki was the second best for me, and the rest of the shows were good to decent enough, with the exception of High Score and MGSA.
