Arch-Defender
Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works is the crowning example of something I’ve been saying for years: movies are better when they are part of an overall series rather than standalone. Only too often do movies fail us on plot or character development due to their obvious time constraints. Very few directors ever pull an equal balance of both characters and plot thus succeeding in the arduous task of making a masterful standalone movie. Series on the other hand are lengthily and allow for more than enough character development as well as a properly structured story leaving only the execution to deliver. Which is why a movie based on a series will have a better shot since it won’t have to go about character development from scratch and from there can either continue the series’ storyline or create a new story exclusively for the movie.

The T.V. series Fate/Stay Night explored one of the 3 paths available to the player in the visual novel of the same name and was quite frankly a great series but one only felt having adaptations of the 2 remaining paths would have been great and so here we have path # 2. Basically this movie is an alternative version of the original series which altered several events but at the same time understanding half of its plot requires full knowledge of the series. This allows you to spot the differences as they occur and to see where it diverges from the original. So again my point is proven at how fluidly the movie pulls its plot by relying on previous work of the series which, while a detriment to newcomers, is indeed a good thing to fans and those familiar with the series; the movie doesn’t waste our time re-explaining what we already know and gets right down to business.

The characters see their development in the series where you get to know their personalities, see them grow with the flow of event, learn to care for them, and get to know their backgrounds. This is why having seen the series is important since half of the emotionally heavy scenes require knowledge of it and without such knowledge most of the shocking scenes lose their punch as well. The movie does heavily develop Archer, which was very much needed, but overall the characters won’t seem like much unless you’ve seen the series first. Again, relying on previous work provided great characters that are already established and allowed to concentrate on developing the ones that got previously left out thus further affirming movies as a better medium when combined with larger works rather than standing on their own.

Now I’ll speak on the dub, great job! They got most of the actors that stared in the T.V. series to fill their old roles and they once again pulled quite an impressive performance. Even though time has passed you can see they can still get right into character and act with the best of them.

The action is staggeringly amazing in this movie and ranks up there with the best in choreography, directing and epicness. It had an intensity to it the series was lacking and greatly improved on the battle sequences overall, I dare say if you’re an action fan then you’d like this movie regardless of whether or not you’ve watched the original.

Now as I have said this is a movie that should be watched after the series. If I watched it on its own merits I’d say it’s an eye candy action flick with a contrived plot and little character development. But watching it after having seen the series I can say it’s an epic retelling of the tale with an exciting new plot filled with surprising twists and that it does a great job at elaborating on characters we’d wish to see more off back in the series but never got the chance. Clearly a great watch for any fan of the series but I don’t recommend it to any newcomer.
