Plot-Too give a quick summary of Soul Eater, it goes something like this " Set in the Shinigami(Grim Reaper) technical school for weapon meisters, the series follows 3 groups of each a weapon meister and a human weapon as they try to make a "Death Scythe" and so they can be used by the Shinigami for protecting the world. In order to do so, they must collect the souls of 99 evil humans and 1 witch.Ok, so you think that this kind of plot is a little standard for a shounen, well you would be correct there, while it does start off with a standard premise, it does quickly develop into a more darker plot as the show goes on, it becomes more then just a quest for 99 evil human souls and 1 witch soul. The advantages to this plot is that it has a very intriguing world it sets in and the whole concept is interesting and original, and that's one of my favorites aspects of this show, its whole world to sets in.Plus it has a good balance of action, drama and comedy, which is something I don't see many shows achieve in.Not only that, but it manages to excels its genre my adding in creative elements and the fact that it knows what it wants to be, a fun but very creative and stylish adventure. My only problems with the plot, is that it does become more rushed during the second half, some subplots, the friendship aspect was a bit over the top(ok this one might be a nitpick, plus it is important aspect to one of the supporting characters) and then there is the ending.....I don't how to explain the ending, its like they got all the cliches known to man and cramped it all in the last mins of the final episode, and made me thinking "Is this really how they ended this show?!* So bottomline, while the plot was entertaining and loads of fun to watch, it did have a few problems on the ride down and the ending to the show can go and f**k itself.
Artwork-This is a highpoint of the show, cause when I first show the cover of the show, I thought that the character designs and the world look liked something from a Tim Burton movie with a bit of cartoonish style into it, not much to complain about artwork, its that awesome :D and as for the animation, I don't think I need to say much about the animation, as it is produced by one of my favorite studios, Studio Bones(other work include both the fullmetal alchemist series, darker than black, eureka seven, and for recent works Un-go and Blast of Tempest) sure the animation well have a few shortcuts during the action scenes, but when the show wants the animation to look good, it looks good. GO BONES!!!
Soundtrack-The composer for this soundtrack is Taku Iwasaki, whos other noticeable works, is soundtracks for shows such as Jormungard, Katanagatari and Gurren Lagann. Has a blend of orchestrated compositions, hard rock ballads, hip-hop remixes, or combinations of all three.Since I watched the dubbed version, the dub was solid with standout performances such as Micah Solusod(whos was a newcomer back then)as Soul, Todd Haberkorn as Death The Kid and Luci Christian as Medusa and everyone else fitted their characters very well. The 1st opening is just unbelievable, gets me hyped up every time I listen to it, it isn't one of my favorites openings for nothing, all the other songs are a joy to listen too as well.So no complaints from the sound department :)
Characters-Ah yes, the character cast, god where do I begin.I well start with the main characters, I will not give too much detail away, just to save some time.Lets start with our main protagonists Maka Albarn and Soul Eater Evans.Maka is a interesting character as a whole, as I don't really see a lot of strong young females protagonists in the shounen genre, so she is a bit of fresh air.She is also one of more "human" characters of the show, so she can be relateable at times as well. But am not the biggest fan of her personality I will admit, don't get me wrong, I still like her, but I never really find her admirable. As for Soul (who is my favorite character) at first I thought that Soul was one of those "In your face characters" the fact he always brags that he is cool, but as the show progresses, in some regards, he is actually a pretty cool guy, mainly because of his laidback and nonchalant yet very loyal personality, his conflicts with the black blood(sight spoiler for those who haven't gotten past the first 6 or 7 episodes) and his relationship with Maka such as giving advice to her during battle and being very loyal to her,he can transform to a scythe, a weapon that is hardly used in combat and is one of my favorite weapons, and the fact that I love his first outfit in the first half of the show(why did they have to changed his outfit in the second half -_-)Next is Black Star and Tsubaki, I will admit that I don't hate Black Star, if anything I liked him(plus I haven't seen Naruto, so I can't fully compare them both)Yes, while many fans can't stand him due to him being a loud mouth and arrogant prick, I actually find him rather admirable especially after you hear about his backstory, it always surpasses me how characters have messed-up childhoods yet they have positive and upbeat personalty in the present, but that's way I had with Black Star, I didn't find him annoying (that spot belongs to Excalibur (ﺧ益ﺨ)though he wasn't anything special either.I still think Tsubaki is the blandest character out of the main characters, though to her credit, she is the 2nd most "human" character out of the whole cast, and I did enjoy her battle against her own brother. The final group is Death The Kid, Liz and Patty Thompson.Lets start with Kid, who is without a doubt the most popular character in this series, I have to be completely honest, I think he is overrated, I mean I don't dislike him, though I don't love him to death, no pun intended.Just that I think he is a bit too overpowered comparing with the other main characters (though it makes sense, since he is the son of a shimigami) and the fact he doesn't development as much as the other characters like Soul or Black Star.Though he does get a couple of good laughs, I did find him interesting, and his design is awesome. Finally, the Thompson Sisters, they were nothing too special, Liz was alright, I did get a few good laughs from her.I did find Patty a bit annoying, but she was still fun nevertheless. The supporting cast and the villains are great as well (mainly Stein and Medusa).Yes, the characters due have flaws, but they are still fun and enjoyable to watch.
Final Conclusion-Soul Eater is a solid show with colorful and fun characters, interesting and appealing concept, kickass soundtrack and brilliant artwork and animation, which I can recommend to any shounen fan.But the plot does get a bit shaky and the ending is just flat out disappointing, am hoping the manga doesn't make the same mistake.I would give this show a 8.5 out of 10
