Tokyo ghoul made me think about deadman wonderland
the themes and dark pasts and the main being given a power they dont want thats the kind of stuff that makes these similar
Both mains have been forced into a different world with weird powers by someone
but they both will aim for something different in the plot
the characters in both series are very different from eachother so i cant compare that
both have this dark atmosphere, where the main character get involved in a dangerous situation, gets huge powers and gets thrown into a crazy world to survive
bloody stories. both main characters gain weird powers and have to deal with a "new world" after this; in both stories a girl will help the MC, the the opposite also happens. surviving to the mentioned "new world" is also part of both plots

These are both very similar manga in my personal opinion - the mc are both young boys living everyday lives when their lives are suddenly turned upside down. They then have to learn to adjust to their new lives, and have to deal with tragedy and heartbreak along the way. Both manga are very dark and contain a lot of violence, and just have an overall very similar feel. If you're looking for something more mature, and like one of these manga, then I recommend the other.
Both tell a story of the protagonist getting caught up in a life-or-death situation with supernatural beings, and their tragic backstories. Deadman Wonderland has stunning visuals, constant plot twists and the reveal near the end is amazing. Also both their Manga counterparts are better than the anime.

I feel that Tokyo Ghoul is based off of Deadman. without to many spoilers:
-Both follow young male leaders were there thrust into a world they don't understand after a thing happens, making them into an setting's "monster".
-The "monsters" have unique powers that are all based around manipulation of a body part
-one of the MC's first allies is a Sword/Blade user
-there is a Bird Motif and the last generation's "Strongest Monster" is referred to as "The Owl"
-there is a secrete police of Anit-Monster soldiers who are the Good Guys on paper but are horrible people
