Hunter x Hunter and Magi are similar in ways in which the main male protagonists has a set goal in mind. With that goal, they strive to accomplish it with any means and along the way encounter various obstacles - some that puts their lives at risk while others tests their abilities to their max potentials.
As with any fantasy setting goes, expect an adventure and fighting. There are are also various arcs for both manga involving many of the characters with twists and revelations.

Both protagonists are young boys in constant pursuit of a goal. Gon aspires to become a hunter to find his father, while Aladdin fights to protect the flow of fate. They are both blessed with unimaginable talent and potential. Although they start out powerless, they grow through each battle and each new encounter; gaining new friends and enemies along the way.
Both mangas have similar themes and art styles. A fantasy with plenty of action, comedy, and adventure. If you enjoyed one, you'll surely love the other.

Both Magi and Hunter x Hunter stray from normal shonen tropes by introducing a group of main characters and then separating them for very long portions at a time while introducing brand new characters to seemingly take their place until those original main characters return. It's a nice shake-up and both Togashi and Ohtaka are good at creating new characters that are interesting.
They also deal with a lot of darker subject matter that most modern shonen manga wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pool. Magi isn't anywhere near as dark or complex as Hunter x Hunter, but it does seem to be inspired by it

some of Magi characters based on characters from HxH, both are not typical shonens who offer something that other don't and many other small touches
While many shonen manga stress the idea of the "group" of protagonists, Magi and Hunter x Hunter give each character faculty and individual development.

It's quite interesting how similar Magi and Hunter are.
Magi's characterization is on par with Hunter's; well designed and well developed characters who have great character development, personality's, and interaction with the other characters. Aladdin alone reminds me of Gon from Hunter. There are also some aspects of the world building that are similar with both of them being in a fantasy setting. As for the arcs, Magi and Hunter both offer something different for each arc while still progressing the story forward. Interesting to note that there are moments in both series where it focuses on other characters besides the main character or main cast.
