Neither the stories nor the settings are similar but the main characters give off the same vibes.
Shirou acts like Light: organized, proper, and uptight. No maniacal laughs though. He also takes issue with the L-like Kurokichi. Kuro is weird, mysterious, "all-knowing", somewhat impartial and aloof, just like L. He even has dark circles underneath his eyes and also has a kind of food fetish (milk in Kurokichi's case) Ririko looks like Misa with the hairstyle and gothic outfit. She's also pretty useless. Same thing. The characters of Shirokuro Kitan might as well have been copy-pasted from Death Note, otherwise heavily influenced by it. It's too

Both stories are dark and broody mystery themed stuff and a strange inanimate object that seems to be one of the biggest sources of trouble for the main characters in the story.
