Both of the main characters go to school that specializes in their field; for Soma it's cooking for Jaden/Judai it's dueling, Crowler/Erina want the MCs to leave also both protagonists are really good at their respective fields.

Hear me out on this one since it's not food related at all.
While watching Shokugeki no Soma I felt an odd resemblance between the characters and story arcs between this show and YuGiOh GX.
-Both the MC's come from unknown/ second-rate backgrounds but are secretly really good at their craft.
-Their posse of friends aren't the best but MC's help them overcome their weaknesses and also along the way meet rivals who feel more like friends after the viewers get to know them.
-Not to mention the constant mention of class rank/ expulsion is prevalent in both series.
