Both are mecha anime where group of teenagers is trying to save earth with the help of machines. Both have WTF feeling.
Both anime take place in a sci-fi setting military base. There are huge monsters that invade a city, so pilots must operate mechs and figure out the monster's weak spot to destroy them.
Both have same thematics, teenagers fight some alien monsters with mecha. There teenagers are sent by a mysterious organization and the two shows speak about relationship between people

The duality of man. Like, irl.
We have high-quality anime with a very deep philosophy in comparison to that one student project with the group of teens that left everything to that one loner. They still both aim to achieve similar things via mecha, but the quality disparity is quite clear I'd imagine.
