Watch Otaku no Video for a shorter, more old-school, non-student-based, less realistic (toward the end) otaku story.
Watch Genshiken for a longer, more recent otaku story that is completely based in reality and gets deeper into character developments.
Two animes that explore the different cultures of the otaku, and how it is seen in society. In both series we have a group of college students that takes up most of their time in playing, watching anime, reading manga, doing cosplay. Both try to parody and at the same time give a space for these people who consume and are consumed by the current society that has formed in Japan comically and almost real.

Both shows tackle the Otaku scene in a semi-serious and critical but comedic fashion. The MCs get deeper into the world of Otaku while exploring specific niches like model kit building, cosplay, doujinshi and more.
