Both series features betrayal by a trusted friend for his dream and ambition and the rise from hell for revenge by the protagonist. Both of the series share a lot of common elements and circumstances on the main characters as well as a similar ending.
loss and betrayal are also explored. the ending is also quite a shocker.
Both Gankutsuou and Gungrave can be viewed as revenge stories. Gankutsuou is based off the classic novel where Edmond Dantes is sent to prison falsely by his best friend and two other individuals . Upon escaping years later, he extracts revenge on them under the guise of a Count. In Gungrave, Brandon Heat is brought back to life by a scientist to pretty much do the same thing as in Gankutsuou. The difference with Gungrave is that it goes back and explores Brandon's past with his best friend Harry, and what made him lead up to this situation.
Similar in that they both have themes of revenge, mostly take place in the past and follow three dimensional characters.
Gungrave is a story about a young man called Brandon Heat (yes, that second name is ridiculous) and covers his background story. It's full of great gun fights, crime family drama and promises that will last a life time and beyond.
Gankutsuou is literally an anime adaptation of the Count of Monte Cristo with mechs. Can't say much better than that.
