Both animes focus on the killing of mankind.
Elfen Lied: Diclonious that are genetically programmed to kill mankind.
Death Note: Yagame findds a Death Note, and sets out to use it to become the God of the world.

They are both very dark and have a lot of killings caused by the main character.
In Elfen Lied the diclonious kills humans. In Death Note Yagame judges criminals and kills them with the death note. Elfen Lied is a bit more straight forward while Death Note has a lot of twists that keep you on the edge of your seat. Both are a must see for any anime lover.
Both involve HUGE amounts of murder, and a sort of mystery that only the viewer and one other person in the story knows the answer to. It creates huge suspense, and has extremely creepy moments, although not necessarily horror.

Both series feature a fast paced story, memorable characters, and high-stake scenes. Although Elfen Lied is much more explicit than Death Note, both storylines are serious. The main characters in each show could both be considered villains of a sort, since they do terrible things based off their own motivations. All in all both series are great and I'd highly recommend you watch them!

Despise humanity. Characters Light and Lucy are similar ideals in erasing what they believe to know brings harm. With the superordinary weapons, they have, they go out of their way purging with no sign of stopping.
Despite this, Light is more of a reaching ideals guy in that he uses his skills as a prodigy to purge the world of the evil that lurks in humanity. Lucy, when she isn't in her split personality, is much more selfish in that she despises humans because of the history they gave her.
