Both involve college drama and romance where love polygons is the predominant theme. Other than that, both have a lot of light hearted comedic moments all around as well.

These are both adult romance. Or seinen/josei romance if you prefer. Unlike most other romance anime, which deal with the awkward idealized realization of love, and usually end with the confession, both of these anime skip that part and examine the actually interesting part, the relationship itself. Hachimitsu to Clover (Honey and Clover) and Golden Time both revolves around a group of characters in their more adolescence age with circle of drama, comedy, and romance going between them. Among in the middle of includes a main character who one day meets a girl that stands out as someone they are attracted to. There's humorous dialogues and lighthearted comedy but also some dramatic moments that become memorable. Additionally, both series are handled by JC Staff which sets their tone somewhat in a similar way.

Both are true to reality, slice-of-life without any (or maybe very little) exaggerations and fantasies. Both series are focused on college students and their challenges. GT is more romance-oriented and a bit more comedic, H&C has toned down romance part (in terms of craziness and energy) and anime-cliches. I think they are similar not because of characters/style/theme but because of overall feel and flavor: both have melancholic, sometimes a bit poetic and depressing vibe.
