Novel-based fantasy anime with a girl as the main protagonist. Saiunkoku without the traveling to another world aspect and with more comedy.
The worlds of Saiunkoku and Juuni Kokki are very complex with their own history etc. Characters and their relations to each other are more deep then it seems at first glance. Plus the plot centers around how to rule a country and responsibility coming with this. not to forget the historic costumes...just watch them both...
Like Saiunkoku Monogatari, Juuni Kokuki is set in a fantasy world similar to Ancient China but with a heavier emphasis on the more fantastical aspect. The greatest similarity between these two series lies in the third arc which has a strong complex political intrigue element.
Political intrigue, memorable characters and touch of fantasy in an alternate world similar to Ancient China.

Two shows, the same deep well of Chinese culture and mythology to draw from. Whether it be design or narrative elements, both of these shows draw deeply from Chinese sources. Juuni Kokuki is the most distinctly 'Japanese', but only because much of the action takes place in modern-day Japan.

Both take place in similar times, both have strong female leads looking to change the current kingdom's situation and both female leads dress as males. Each series deals heavily in the politics at that time, and both series seem to examine a wide array of human emotion. Saiunkoku had more romance, and Juuni kokuki had more action.

Counter recommendation, but still a recommendation. I honestly started this for the romance tag, and the many recommendations relating this Saiunkoku to The Twelve Kingdoms. I'm so disappointed, and regret starting Saiunkoku based on those facts, as it doesn't really have romance and there's no similitude to The Twelve Kingdoms. DO NOT WATCH SAIUNKOKU IF YOU ARE EXPECTING ANYTHING LIKE THE TWELVE KINGDOMS.
So far the most similar anime to Juuni Kokuki, based upon the art, timeline, culture and story. Both feature common crew members and the genre is similar too. The only major difference seems to be that while Saiunkoku Monogatari is more romantic in nature, Juuni Kokuki has a lot of adventure in it.
