A person decides to play God within a game where people can interface with a virtual reality. If the God's rules aren't met people die. Basically, very similar situations between the two games. There is also the question of "why" anyone would do this and if they have a reason for being so cruel.

Well, I suggested a movie because it is quite similar to this anime. Warning: If you do not like original Detective Conan series, DO NOT watch this movie... This movie is about 50 children, testing a new gaming device called "Cocoon". The computer, as a boy's voice, takes over the whole system while the children are inside the virtual world(Cocoon uses your five senses, and you have to sit in a cocoon shaped chair) The children's life are risked, as they choose a stage from the 5 stages. Life and death situation within a video game. Please note that this movie was made WAY before SAO. One difference is that Detective Conan has a big mystery/case within the movie. SAO just shows the adventures that Kirito goes through.

With the same fate, both MC trapped in the virtual world. To solved mystery about who is the mastermind behind the case they dont have any choices but to fight and protect someone dear to them. Death in the game mean also death in real world. pretty similar plot with some romance...

Both tell a story about a person's world or life determined through games. Maybe it's just a coincidence.

Both have the same concept of a big number of people trapped in a virtual world and they must clear the game in order to live. If they lose the game, death will await them. By coincidence, both were released in 2002 (SAO as a self-published novel from Reki Kawahara). They take similar approaches and questions such as why someone do that and what he wants to do, but at the same time, some different approaches. SAO focuses more on the survival, becoming strong in the game, while Detective Conan takes more a mystery and action approach, like always.
