Oh yeah, the "girl" in the background on my anime/manga list is Butters cross-dressing as Marjorine from South Park that I thought was pretty well done.

Yes, I adored that specific track, and I thought it was used perfectly in the series. I definitely agree with you on Johan and Nina's relationship; but everything about their lives was quite disturbing. Oh yes, and it was Christof that you were role-playing.
I'm sorry for this extremely late reply. I've been occupied with improving my music production setup, intermittent depression, and other events/concerns. I just ceased communicating with everyone these last few months, which isn't logical and proved to be regrettable.
That isn't an appropriate excuse for such a lengthy abrupt disappearance, so again, I apologize. I hope you had an enjoyable holiday season & New Year.
I completed "Monster" and what a wonderful experience it was, I must thank you for recommending it to me. The ending was beautiful and left me with a haunting feeling.
The standoff scene and the expression Johan has was crushing, I wonder if no one had shot him, would he have shot himself. Of course at the end forgiveness was the theme, but the most important aspect of forgiveness is forgiving yourself, and I don't know if Johan is capable of doing so.
Another scene that was quite striking was when Johan is talking to Milos and says "most of this universe is death". In my lesser moments, words like that have come out of my own mouth. It was unnerving to say the least. I think that scene connects well with the end quote "only in death are we all equal", in describing Johan's nihilism.
Hmm, Johan acts much like Johan, least when he is playing the role of Johan. Are you role playing Johan when he is role playing as Johan? I will definitely check out "Another Monster" and that Tumblr page since the name fuckyeahjohanliebert is humorous to me.
The last five episodes only increased how much I like Lunge, I'm not sure if I could comprehend how someone would not like him. I would probably watch a series with just him figuring out cases.
I haven't watched Ayakashi yet, but Mononoke seemed self contained, in fact there are multiple acts in the series and they are all self contained stories. In my opinion the nature of the protagonist Kusuriuri(in Mononoke) doesn't require that the stories follow a linear path.
Johan is a broken and immensely depressed person, who can't make meaningful empathic connections to other people. It seems possible that he is suffering from dissociative disorder, I believe he both hates and wishes to escape himself(as well as his past). He views life and the world as being seemingly meaningless, it is perhaps almost unreal to him like a story from a picture book and he is the main character.
With that said, yes, I do feel sympathy for him. His past has made him predisposed to being inhuman or psychologically damaged, but the larger question is how much he has chosen to be the aforementioned monster. Underneath that "monstrous" mask he adorns is still a person, a person who could have been different.
There are a few scenes which I think express this to a degree. He becomes emotional listening to Karl's story in episode 26, but I believe that was simply acting. The breakdown upon finding the picture book in episode 33, and the breakdown(laughing & crying) after meeting Nina in episode 67. In episode 43 when Suk opens up to them and says that they are "the only one with whom I can find peace of mind", Johan(as Anna) reply's with a short smile that almost seems sincere.
Johan is more a tragedy then a monster. I wonder how much my opinion may change in the final 5 episodes.
I find Lunge to be the most interesting of the somewhat strange characters with weird mannerisms. I like how he expresses himself subtly(or almost not at all), the way he "becomes" the suspect, his obsession with solving cases, and his "objective" hand. Every scene he is in is quite great.
It's a lovely atmospheric film, and I'm glad you liked it.
The ending was quite interesting with the showing of different displaced scenes. Kenji has taken up smoking, a trait of Noi, and for the first times seems happy; yet he is being arrested and will likely be charged. The scene with Noi in Japan and the eventually reuniting is either imagined or not, depending on your outlook. It's sadly ironic that for the first time in both of their lives they have something positive to look forward to, but circumstances won't allow it.
I'm sure Kenji was part of the yakuza, the role he played and his past is left to interpretation. The way he lives and some of his actions makes me assume that he desires to escape his past. It is also possible that he was simply born into the yakuza and wants nothing to do with it.
I wouldn't describe it as confusing, but it does have an odd tempo and many things are not directly explained. The short parts that do have violence are also not directly shown to the audience, and it's certainly not scary in anyway. Perhaps somewhat depressing, although that is subjective.
I came across this film while reading about various Korean films that I liked, and it was recommended. It's a Thai film, one of the few that I've seen.
Oh, David Sylvian. I'm really enjoying the soundtrack to Monster, especially the ending theme. His voice is always welcomed.
I watched a film recently that I believe you would enjoy, titled Last Life in the Universe. I thought it was quite incredible with an equally fitting soundtrack. It's very subtle with a high emphasis on imagery, and a unusual style of humor.
Oh, and my absence from the other site was only temporary, seemingly due to my indecisive disposition.
I haven't watched that film, but I believe I saw parts of it many years ago(I think I was very young at the time). From watching the trailer it seems vaguely familiar, but perhaps that's just a dose of 90's nostalgia. I say it's worth checking out to at least see if it's underrated, and it appears to have creative set designs.
