Hunter x Hunter is probably one of the most famous franchises in the animanga world. I think that any informed anime fan, despite of having actually seen the anime or read the manga, knows at least the name of Hunter x Hunter and many others can recognize its characteristic artwork and characters.
Hunter X Hunter, basically and from what we can see from the first episode, is a story about a boy, Gon, that leaves his home in order to become an Hunter like his father, and learn what's so special about it and what made it so special that a father could abandon his child in other to pursue that career. Gon, determined, does everything he can in order to pursue this objective. During his journey in the way to become an Hunter he befriends Leorio, Kurapika and, later, Killua.
This series is the remake of the original 1999 TV Series. In more than 10 years, many things changed in the anime industry. The animation is a lot more brighter and fluid, the soundtracks won't probably give the same feeling since our music became a lot more electronic, and the famous voice actors are probably not the same. Those were some of the main changes on this remake.
The artwork in this series didn't change too much. It has its main characteristics and it's as beautiful as one can be, while not being completely different from what we're used to on other shonen animes, but having that aura of uniqueness around it. The animation is fluid and bright, similar to the one that since last year we've been graced with. I think that it will get really better, and with a studio like Madhouse, animation will not be a problem on this series and I'm sure fights will be extremely well done.
The soundtrack is probably where it's been said that there's been a major lack. The OP and ED are incredibly beautiful. The OP is cheerful and goes well with the idea of the anime, a good thing to begin a shonen anime, it shows Gon innocence that is blatant at the beginning of the series ( and it would probably get darker and darker, and I think that the openings will follow the course of the story ). It's fitting fot the beginning of the series, and it's a beautiful song. The ED is a little more darker, it remembered me somewhat more Madhouse-ish and I think it also fits the anime, in the later arcs that I've already seen some parts of. But, and now I shall compare, they're not as refreshing as the originals ( that I must say, and now I'm probably a little bias, are as beautiful as I haven't seen many others ) and sure not as catchy. But, nevertheless, they're great.
The background music, though, is not that great. It isn't epic and it does not give chills in my spine, but it's not bad. It's a medium-good background music, but we probably haven't seen even half of it so, we'll have to wait.
The voice actors are completely awesome and doing a great job. Leorio's voice is probably the best for me. It matches so well the character and it's such a pleasant voice for a man. Gon's voice I can't believe it's not Junko. This new girl is doing such an incredible job and I'm sure she'll be famous for this role. Kurapika is ... well, it's Sawashiro Miyuki, a popular voice actor that I love deeply. It's a little more feminine than the other woman that gave voice to Kurapika, but well, it fits.
Now the characters. We have our cheerful main leader, Gon, that is a determined, joyful, bright boy, that is willing to help anyone right from the moment he met them. He wants to become an Hunter because he wants to know more about his father. Then we have Leorio, a kind but at first rude guy ( older than the other three ). He wants to be an Hunter because he needs money. Kurapika is a intelligent, talented boy, the last one from the Kurta tribe. He wants to become an Hunter in order to pursue his revenge, and only has an Hunter he can have the resources to do so. The other one is Killua but I won't extend for now on his character because he has still to appear on this season and this is a review mainly of the first episode of this series.
We haven't seen too much of them yet, and I'm sure that the character rating that I gave ( 8 ) will probably get to a 9 as when the development begin ( and possible a ten ).
Now this is what I liked the most about the series. This one ( as well as the last one ) is incredibly enjoyable. It's refreshing, it has a good concept and setting, lovable characters, and everything that a shonen anime needs to be good. It gets you hooked right from the opening till the end of the episode and I sure am looking forward to an amazing remake that, two or three years from now ( when it catches the old anime ) will probably continue the story that the original series left to told.
I recommend everyone to give it a shot. It doesn't matter if you have never seen the series before, or if you're a fan of the original series that just saw the first episode or the reviews and is a little disappointed because of some changes ( namely on the pace ). The advice I give is: see this as an individual series. I know it's difficult, but try not to compare every little thing to the manga or to the original anime. It will get a lot more enjoyable and you will see your opinion about this remake will increase greatly.
