Yeah it makes sense that not all things are created equal in critiquing content. That is why, for the risk of sounding like a broken record, I base my judgment based on personal enjoyment and recommendation with only the Zero meaning that the show is bad. I suppose that time will tell if I can confidently make a judgement on a traditional 1-10 scale.

I am sure that I will eventually understand the tropes of anime, but one thing that genuinely surprised me was that when I asked for suggestions on shows that were "good" (with a description of my tastes as well) SAO was what I am to believe the only popular MMO anime that was suggested, and I have heard of .Hack and Log Horizon before but they were not suggested.

Yeah, the cross comparison is really difficult, especially with a case like Haruhi, because with that show I would be the first to say that if you could use an objective scale to rate television, it would be "good", like a 10/10 in the technical aspects as we have discussed, but at the same time, for the X factor of personal enjoyment it just didn't perform well. A great show to compare it to that I have finished watching would be Future Diary/ Mirai Nikki, a show that has a silly plot that tries to be serious, some awkward characters, occasional skips in animation, liberal use of CGI, and a lot of plot convenience and smoothing going on, but at the same time it was just so incredibly entertaining to watch that I couldn't stop.

But I suppose another thing that I am really fucking myself with, which has been brought up after publishing the Haruhi Suzumiya review, was that I didn't include or factor in anything from the source material or additional chapters from the Manga or Light Novel. I agree with this statement, and if I was doing a cross medium assessment of Haruhi Suzumiya I would definitely need to do that or else the review would be simply disingenuous, but the thing is is that I only review the show based off of what is present in the Anime. Being that animes are just 30 minute commercials for Manga... I have effectively shot myself in the cock.

One of the big things with the Blog that I want to go out and see is how long it takes me to turn to a salty regular into the community, so I started basically doing reviews to see how long the honeymoon period starts and hopefully use myself as a case study for others as well.

Oh, okay. I have a bit a problem with the traditional 1-10 review scale, so I refrain from using it.

After years of seeing it I have come to realize that trying to use a scale like that based on that is somewhat arbitrary. Personally, I don't know enough anime to feel that I can give an accurate and objective assessment of a show based on things like animation, characters, voice, etc. But my main conflict with it is how random passersby are supposed to relate to MY 1-10 scale to theirs as well as use that as a means to compare other shows that may have conflicting genres.

I can really explain this problem with my reaction to The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (which I have reviewed), Every technical aspect of the show was superb and would get the highest marks if I rated them all individually, but at the same time, I simply did not enjoy watching the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Comparatively, I have watched Sword Art Online and would not hesitate to say that it was a flawed show, but I just seemed to enjoy it more at times.

In my reviews, I do use a number in my final conclusion to compare the shows that I have watched from each other, but the kicker that I have is that my score, a 0-5, is solely based on my own enjoyment of the show as well as the strength of recommending it to others.

The way that It shakes down is this:

0: the only rating that says that the show is bad, this is for the shows that are complete dumpster fires like 12 oz Mouse.
1: I did not enjoy the show and would not personally recommend it, but there is definitely a niche audience out there for it.
2: The show itself isn't bad, I just didn't enjoy it, but there is definitely an audience for it. (Haruhi Suzumiya)
3. Partially enjoyed it, my recommendation is to watch it to make up your own conclusions or to see what the fuss is about. (Sword Art Online)
4. I enjoyed the show and recommend it to others. (D-Frag, Kill La Kill)
5. I enjoyed this show so much and recommend seeing it that if someone were to ask me to watch it directly after I finished the final episode, I would watch it again. (Gurren Lagann,)

I know, it does sound a bit pretentious and faggoty, and in reality I just haven't watched enough anime yet, but I feel that I need to do this because the only thing that I am sure of is my own enjoyment of a show and honesty. Otherwise, I do write long and droning reviews to hopefully get across all my thoughts and feelings.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
