Dog Days 2
Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon 2
Rinne no Lagrange 2
Sword Art Online
Natsuyuki Rendevous
Basically, summer is the one season where I can (hopefully) watch a lot of older series and I'm limiting myself to watching less than 10 new shows.
**=Show is currently "On Hold"
Shows I'm (probably*) going to watch in Summer:
-Aria series *sees many comparisons to Natsume* MUST WATCH.
-D.Gray-man** - I remember this being one of the best shounens i've seen.
-Katanagatari** - Why must each ep be 50 minutes long?
-Darker than Black - A BONES series I haven't seen yet.
-Black Lagoon - The show Jormungand reminds people of.
-Seirei no Moribito -
-Mushishi - *sees a billion comparisons to Natsume* MUST WATCH.
-Kara no Kyoukai - ufotable and Yuki Kajiura? I need this after Fate/Zero.

About Me:
Been a casual anime fan for about 3 years and have recently expanded my viewing horizons. I tend to pick series i know i'll enjoy which skews my MAL rating a bit, heh so off to watch some ecchi then right? (no). I enjoy a wide-range of genres but i really like slice of life series the most and if you look at my favorite characters list below you can see i like a lot of different things in an anime. I like pure comedies like Hayate no Gotoku, sappy melodrama like AnoHana, slice of life like Natsume Yuujinchou, over-the-top achievers like Code Geass and pure mindless violent fun like H.O.T.D and Deadman Wonderland. Yep i like most series in general.
My biggest pet peeves in an anime are character designs: Sorry Clannad and One Piece, i will never touch those shows with such atrocious designs: one is too moe and one is just damn ugly.
Best Animation Studio: Brain's Base
I've loved pretty much every series from this studio. The effort and detail this studio puts in their series is phenomenal. This studio puts their best foot forward on practically any show that they've worked on. They might not be perfect (they animated Akikan..), but i've really enjoyed what they've had to offer such as: (in order of best to "worst")
This is a studio worth remembering, they already have genuine successes under their belt.
Favorite Animes (with comments):
Natsume Yuujinchou - I absolutely will say with 100% certainty that this is the best show I've ever watched. The only one to truly make an emotional connection to me and the themes all resonate with my life, it's the epitome of perfection in my eyes. Animation? Decent in season 1, good in season 2, holy shit this is amazing-quality in seasons 3 and 4. Music? Beautiful. Characters? Loveable. Story? Absolutely episodic but told wonderfully well with really standout personalities.
Season 1 Scores: Animation: 7, Story: 9, Sound: 10, Characters: 9, Enjoyment: 10
Season 2 Scores: Animation: 8, Story: 9, Sound: 10, Characters: 9, Enjoyment: 10
Season 3 Scores: Animation: 10, Story: 9, Sound: 10, Characters: 9, Enjoyment: 10
Season 4 Scores: Animation: 10, Story: 10, Sound: 10, Characters: 10, Enjoyment: 10
Baccano! - Masterful storytelling with an amazing cast of characters. So many different plots converge beautifully in only thirteen episodes.
Animation: 7, Story: 10, Sound: 9, Characters: 10, Enjoyment: 10
Steins;Gate - A wonderful experience not seen since Code Geass. Plot twists that make sense, wonderful characters, an intricate plot. Steins;Gate may be over-rated but i loved it.
Animation: 8, Story: 10, Sound: 8, Characters: 9, Enjoyment: 10
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica - Another "over-rated" series than isn't as bad as people may say. It's got creative animation, wonderful BGM, likeable characters and one of the best stories of the year. A must watch.
Animation: 9, Story: 9, Sound: 9, Characters: 9, Enjoyment: 10
Michiko to Hatchin - Now let's switch gears to this under-rated gem from Manglobe. A wonderful adventure set in South America with very likeable characters, creative visuals and a stellar BGM. The plot sucks, but the story (and the adventure) is memorable.
Animation: 9, Story: 9, Sound: 10, Characters: 10, Enjoyment: 10
Code Geass - Season 1 was the pinnacle of amazing, especially what went down on the last episode, DID NOT SEE THAT COMING. Season 2 kinda sucked but that last episode...was totally worth it.
Season 1 Scores: Animation: 8, Story: 9, Sound: 9, Characters: 9, Enjoyment: 10
Season 2 Scores (excluding ep 25): Animation 9, Story: 6, Sound: 9, Characters: 7, Enjoyment: 7
Season 2 Episode 25: Animation: 9, Story: 9, Sound: 10, Characters: 10, Enjoyment: 10+
Death Note - Masterful art of suspense buildup with characters so flawed it's hard to root for or against anybody. I LOVED the fact that the main character was evil, because it's so annoying to see every protagonist be the good guy. Protagonist as an antagonist with maturity.
Animation: 8, Story: 9, Sound: 9, Characters: 10, Enjoyment: 9
Usagi Drop - Everything that applies to Natsume Yuujinchou almost applies here. It didn't connect with me personally (I don't plan on raising kids), but everything about this show is realistic, mature and dignified.
Animation: 10, Story: 9, Sound: 9, Characters: 10, Enjoyment: 10
Mawaru Penguindrum - Imaginative, creative and unique are some out of many words to describe this series. It's a real treat, for those who really want to experience (yes experience, not watch) what anime can really produce with enough creative minds. Only one unlikeable character (the bad guy, duh) and the rest of the cast including the supporting characters are extremely likeable and you'll be rooting for all of them.
Animation: 9, Story: 9, Sound: 9, Characters: 9, Enjoyment: 9
Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya - The movie, not so much the show. It brought a whole level of character development coupled with strong animation and BGM.
2007 series: Animation: 7, Story: 6, Sound: 7, Characters: 8, Enjoyment: 6
2010 series: Animation: 8, Story: 6, Sound: 7, Characters: 7, Enjoyment: 4
Movie: Animation: 10, Story: 9, Sound: 8, Characters: 9, Enjoyment: 9
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - A shounen series that doesn't suck/never end/have crappy animation/etc.... Yeah you get the picture. It's the best shounen series to date and it's much more smarter and better than any of the rest. BONES did a great job.
Animation: 9, Story: 9, Sound: 9, Characters: 8, Enjoyment: 8
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 - Before there was AnoHana, there was this 11 episode heart-pulling drama story. If you loved AnoHana, this is the show for you.
Animation: 7, Story: 9, Sound: 8, Enjoyment: 8, Enjoyment: 9
Durarara!! - The very definition of fun. Wonderful characters, great animation and BGM though the plot is a bit lacking. It was a fun ride with this show.
Hayate no Gotoku - My first real comedy/parody anime. Norio Wakamoto as the narrator = instant win. The parodies were great and even the serious stuff was done quite well.
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED - My first Gundam experience is probably the most biased one. It had really weak animation (re-used a ton of noticeable scenes), some characters were just annoying but i liked the simplicity of it. The BGM was seriously god-tier amazing.
Short Version: 10: - Amazing, breathtaking and completely worth the watch. 9: - Fantastic, outstanding and definitely worth the watch. 8: - Great, some faults, but worth the watch. 7: - Good, a few/couple of faults, but deserves a watch. 6: - Okay, but highly forgettable. 5-1: - Inherently horrible, some of which are overtly pretentious in nature.
Long Version: 10: Amazing to watch, completely enjoyed this show. There could be a few flaws, but overall this series is truly a show that connected with me and effort was seriously put into this show be it animation, music, voice acting or story Examples: Natsume Yuujinchou, Steins;Gate and Baccano!
9: A really outstanding series with a few flaws and effort was really put into this show be it animation, music, voice acting or story. Examples: Code Geass, Death Note and Usagi Drop
8: Ireally enjoyed this show overall. There are some flaws to this series, some things are less than desired but quite frankly this is a show that really put in a lot of effort. Examples: Durarara!!, Ookiku Furikabutte
For me, there's a big line that divides a 7 and an 8 type of series. So, pretend there's a line here.
7: It's a good series, a bit flawed but still enjoyable to watch. It may have one good quality that outshines the more lackluster parts of this series. 7 series are Examples:Ano Hana, The iDOLM@STER, Ore no Imouto
6: Flaws are everywhere! Yet its still somewhat watchable, right above the middle of the rating system. It's a decent series, but it seriously had a lot of problems that prevented it from being even better. Very forgettable series are at least a 6. Examples:Ao no Exorcist, Umineko no Naku Koro ni, Deadman Wonderland
5: Right in the middle. It's bad, but there are SOME good things about this show, basically it's average and highly forgettable. I really wouldn't recommend a show like this... Examples: Another, Bakemonogatari, Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Ni!
4: Absolutely horrible. There MAY be one or two things about it that are okay at best, but completely dreadful. STAY FAR AWAY FROM A SERIES LIKE THIS: Guilty Crown.
3: In it for the lulz.So bad it's good.
2: You're still reading this? Seriously?
1: Naruto and Mars of Destruction. One was for the lulz/out of pure boredom, the other was out of curiosity of low ratings.
it was your birthday yesterday? Belated Happy Birthday :D
btw, I dropped by to say in advance that my posts for Kimi to Boku. 2 and ZETMAN will be later than usual since I'm already back to school (x_x) and my school has blocked torrent downloads (T^T). Hopefully my dorm's internet will be fix soon or else i'll get to post everything by Friday onward. (>A<)
oh, and I saw that you're already working on the summer sched.I haven't decided on all the shows I'll watch but I'm sure it won't be as many as this season. I'll be waiting on your preview(:
Oh okay, I still wouldn't consider Hyouka to be pretentious based upon that though. Would that mean just because a show has a cast of intelligent characters trying to uncover life's mysteries it's pretentious? Going by that logic, Persona 4 and Scooby Doo are just filled with pretentious hipster bullshit. Jokes aside, if a show clearly sets itself up towards something (ie. philosophical tone right from the get go) then it generally deserves the right to tackle these heavy themes. Now if 95% of a show is like fanservice and ecchi crap with the last 5% being a philosophical discussion (ie. Nisemonogatari) then that's pretentious in my mind.
Which brings me to Inu x Boku SS. I do admit I was a bit harsh with my assessment of it in my review. Even though I gave the show a 5/10, that's an average score in my mind. But since a lot of people on MAL seem to feel anything below a 7 is "bad", I had to harshen my tone to justify my score. But yes, I know Inu x Boku isn't on the same level as Natsume nor does it try to be. I just made the comparison to make the point that Inu x Boku didn't use the supernatural aspect very much to enhance its characters. I mean they could shape shift, but this just seemed like another minor quirk.
Most of the characters just had a single quirk which was repeated ad infinitum, and this got old quickly. Karuta, Watanuki and Mr. FABULOUS did have a bit more depth, but it was nothing significant as they reverted back to their quirks whenever the plot wasn't making them "develop". I didn't really focus on them in my review since it was already getting quite long. As for Ririchiyo, I didn't mind the attention given to her interpersonal issue, but rather the timing of it in each episode. In some of the earlier episodes, the tone was on light-hearted fun, then within the last minute or two in the episode, Ririchiyo gets all depressed. The constant wavering back and forth with her kind of dragged on a bit. I would agree that the final episode was the show's strongest. And had the rest of the show kept to that quality, it would have changed my opinion. If the show was just a shoujo-ish comedy then it would have been much better. But it had to throw in all these other aspects to please as many fans as possible.
I may sound like I really dislike Inu x Boku, but I actually quite enjoyed it as well. I'm glad you brought these things up as I always like having discussions. Plus, if you enjoyed something and feel it's good, then you should try and argue for it. Though I do have my guilty pleasures as well (ie. Smile Precure) that I know aren't that great, but still love to death.
Question, what about Hyouka do you find to be pretentious? I'm not really seeing any of that. Sure the show has moe and the creative direction can be out of place at times but it's not like they'e trying to uncover the root of humanity or the existence of god. As an example we both know and love, Guilty Crown was pretentious because it threw in random biblical crap towards the end.
Very well. Looking forward towards what you think, I suppose.
Anyways thanks for the accept. Your username caught my attention, I have a feeling I've seen it before. Youtube perhaps? Your list also happen to catch my attention, it seems we have some areas of agreement/disagreement, your views are fairly interesting. Having Gundam AGE is a plus, glad to see you're enjoying it(I consider 6 enjoying it to an extent). While I'm here how are feeling about AKB0048 so far? I'm looking forward in checking out other entries of Spring 2012, perhaps the best season I've seen so far.
Hey, no problem. Hopefully you get around to watching a few of them at the very least! I hate to be a killjoy but I'm really not looking forward to that much for the summer season. Most of the shows are either sequels to stuff I haven't seen or just don't seem that interesting. I guess Rinne 2, Sword Art, Natsuyuki Rendevous and Moyashimon returns (assuming I watch the first season by then) is about it for me at the moment. I'll probably end up watching a lot less compared to this season since I'll be working everyday starting this Tuesday and won't have as much free time.
Yeah, 500 is an all time high for us (our averages are usually between 300-400 now but sometimes higher/lower by a bit). I'm still not sure what drives up view counts but they seem to be higher for us on weekend days and drop in the middle of the week. Views are nice, but I'd almost rather have more people that comment on a regular basis like on your blog.
Ah okay, not sure if I'll do it either since my review will likely just be filled with rage (even though said rage is justifiable in the case of BRS).
Oh god, I feel sorry that you actually made yourself watch that. I saw the infamous reaction video to it on youtube and that was plenty for me. As worrisome as it is, somehow things in Mirai Nikki make more sense now that I know the same guy behind Boku no Pico's script was behind it. Now the director of Pico is what scares me since he's also worked on a number of kid's shows...
I recommended you a few titles (okay, more like quite a few) that I thought you might like based on your tastes below
- Aria the Animation/Natural/Origination (can't go wrong with this, just don't marathon it)
- Revolutionary Girl Utena (same director as Penguindrum, filled with fabulous allegories and imagery)
- Haibane Renmei (similar premise to Angel Beats but executed so much better, great atmosphere and plot)
- Cowboy Bebop (same director as Apollon, jazzy, action-packed, what's not to love?)
- Crest/Banner of the Stars (really well-produced space adventure title. You might find this one a bit slow though)
- Princess Tutu (fantastic creativity, interesting multi-layered plot for a magical girl title)
- Mushishi (similar to your all-time favourite except it's more philosophical than emotional)
- Kara no Kyoukai movies (you love Fate/Zero, it's ufotable, Kajiura did the soundtrack)
- Black Lagoon (action packed, tons of foul language, similar American feel to Baccano)
- The Tatami Galaxy (heard it's similar to Steins;Gate with time travel/repeating the same event)
- Seirei no Moribito (josei title that deals with the parenting theme in a similar vein to Usagi Drop and Tokyo Magnitude 8.0)
- Perfect Blue (a psychological thriller film that blurs the lines between dreams and reality)
That should keep you more than busy for the summer, lol
Alternatively, if you want to find more stuff to watch that is suited to your tastes, you can try this site: http://animecf.com/. Just type in your MAL username and it will recommend titles based on your MAL scores.
I am so tempted to do that "Ideal Anime Cast" thing that you posted on your blog right about now. You picked some pretty rad characters for their respective roles.
Also, are you going to be participating in the review contest for BRS this month? I'm not sure if I will but I kind of want to tear that show a new one.
Hey man, how's AKB0048 so far? Seeing as you're the only person that I know who is watching it right now, I was wondering if it was any good. The premise seemed interesting to me, but I was a bit concerned with the execution and the fact that it could easily just become an idolmaster clone.
Also, ufotable and urobuchi have a twisted sense of humour with Fate/Zero ep.19 being on mother's day.
Uh...is it just me or is Accel World getting more and more ridiculous with each passing episode? The whole confrontation between Silver Crown and Cyan Pile turned into a huge declaration of love and friendship! And of course, Kuroyukihime didn't really die and was revived one episode latter! It's almost like I'm watching Guilty Crown all over again, almost...
Hmm, that's quite an interesting article that you've written about UN-GO. I think doing a bit of off-topic analysis (be it on a character or theme) is a great way to add variety to your blog. I find that episode posts almost require one to adopt a more technical viewpoint while writing since the show is still airing. That's why I figured throwing in an analysis or two breaks that pace and gives people another reason to check the blog out.
As for UN-GO's movie, I felt it did a better job at accomplishing what it set out to do than the main series. Due to the film's short run-time, characterization felt tighter as did the main themes. I was always a bit iffy with Shinjuurou's motivations in the series and the movie solidified them quite nicely. The political side of the show was always something that interested me, yet I felt as though it wasn't executed as well as it could've been. Likely this was due to the sub-par mystery element bringing that section of the show down. I do agree that the main point of UN-GO isn't the detective aspect but uncovering different aspects of a post-war Japan. I'll probably leave a more in depth reply about my thoughts on UN-GO on your blog post to get some discussion started.
And finally, I couldn't help but notice that you're now competing in this month's review contest! I was getting worried that I would be the only one this month. I still need to get my review completed though. Trying to de-construct a deconstruction is difficult though...
I have half a mind to pick up Hyouka for blogging right now since our writer who was supposed to cover it is now too busy (but writing about 5 shows is a bit...eh). Twas a pretty good first episode actually. The show managed to keep a good mood and characterization wasn't bad either for a school based title. I'd like it if Kyo Ani stuck more to shows like this than their usual moe garbage.
Actually I envy how well both you and blacksheep have worked things out with your blogging schedule and are able to get posts out in a timely manner. I'd hate for things to go sour between me and our other writers but I kind of want them to get their posts out on time (within 1-2 days). Any advice?
I really hate myself for not watching it sooner.
The first few episodes until episode9 (where I am now) were really great. I like the light comedy and the very moving scenes every episode. I actually thought before that it's boring and I won't get pass the first few episodes. Guess I was stand corrected. I'll do my best to finish until S4 before I go back to school :D
