Well, of the younger generation I guess like 80-90% speak pretty fluent english, but It's less common amongst the older generations! And if you want to live in Norway or come to Norway, you wouldn't need to speak a word norwegian, even colleges here are mostly in english! I know a girl from USA who has lived and went to school in Norway for 2 years and she doesn't speak a word norwegian! and the motivation to learn norwegian decreases when everyone already speaks english I guess, so Norwegian is still the main language, but english is actually starting to close up to it! And the reason for this is that schools and hospitals are free in Norway, also the schools here are seen as very good, so alot of foreign people come here for schooling or operations. And Norway is also one of the biggest exporters of Oil and fish, and english is needed to communicate with countries that don't speak norwegian (which is every other country in the world), so the compromise would be english !

Yeah, Norwegian has existed for a long long time (though it has changed through the years), but now a days some language scientist think that written norwegian will die out and be replaced with english even in Norway in about 50-150 years : (

Yeah, English is the universal language, and if you count non-native speakers I think it is the most spoken language aswell ! Also I don't really blame the older generation for not speaking english, for example: My father doesn't speak to well english, and he is only 50 years old! So he always asks me for help when it comes to english : ) And I know my grandparents, almost doesn't speak any english, because they are conservative and they think that they will loose their native language if english becomes to big or if too many people starts using it! I guess that is why the older generation likes to stick to their native language, which I can understand! But the for the younger generation english has become a very huge part of communicating, so we kind of need to learn it!

Yea, I think its the same for everyone. Nobody wants to eat alone, although I don't think people really think that way lol. Is it because you think that way when you see people alone? huh??

Im just gonna try to find work first.. and grad school if i can't. lol

I think I can follow lectures better when I'm alone compared to when I'm with friends ( I would just end up talking too much). Still I prefer to have friends in classes because its good to have to people to study together. Everyone gets judged for being alone? I don't really feel that. I'm 4th year, graduating soon.

Haha, yeah! English is a very hard language to learn, and I've been practicing english for almost 12 years now! It has taken up alot of my free time aswell as having it at school. But for me atleast, it's easier to write than to speak, because when I speak, my stupid accent and pronunciation of words come into play! And even though I speak pretty fluent english, I still have my Norwegian-English dictionary with me everytime I come on here, because some words I just have to look up. Also I feel like it would be a little disrespectful not to try your hardest to get the grammar and the orthography right! Atleast that's how I feel when people who has been learning Norwegian for over 10 years, and they still can't speak it properly.

But all in all, It was worth using all that time to learn english, since it has brought me closer to the rest of the world, and it has given me the oppurtunity to get to know alot of people that I never could of communicated with, without english !

lol its so true. Luckily for me I live near campus so its a bit easier for me. Go to prof/TA office hours near assignment due time and tutorials, should be easier to make friends there.
mangoseller Jan 16, 2013 9:34 PM
oooooo are you in college now?
Olveparty Jan 16, 2013 4:50 AM
Haha, yeah, I guess we have been talking alot about languages! I love languages too!
Yeah, I guess every language is different in some way. Also I feel your mothers pain, It's alot harder to translate something from your native language to english, than just reading and understanding english in itself ! Atleast with all these small languages, because often in Norwegian atleast, there is no translation to english for alot of words!
Olveparty Jan 15, 2013 8:03 AM
Oh, It's quite alright! I guess most people are busy around christmas times. Well, Norwegian is a very small language barely spoken by 5million people, even though there are more Norwegians in the US than there are norwegians in Norway (7 million in the US and 5 million in Norway), though most norwegians in the US doesn't actually speak a word norwegian!

Well, Old norse language died out over 700 years ago, so there is no current Norse language : ) But Norwegian is one of the languages that came from Old norse ! And Norway was also the main country of vikings and old norwegian! But Norway has history that goes back to like 3000 BC, but still Norway as we know it today was founded in 1814. So well that is probably why it sounded like it had alot of history behind it, because it does : )

Well, in Norway the alphabet consists of 29 letters (instead of 26) and those extra letters are Æ æ Ø ø Å å, which are only used in Norway and Denmark and they are very much used, just like there is no norwegian words that has the letters W, X and Z in it, we just have them for english loan words like Pizza, Jazz and X-ray !

Hope this helps you understand more about Norwegian language !

Yep, I like him too. Did you see Please Don't MV? I don't follow kpop as much anymore. I followed it when I was much younger, back in the days of Dropping the Tears.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
