Well, truth be told there's not much that can actually be done against AI because it's "impossible to prove for certain" – or at least that's how most of the senpai elves felt. The bans were only applied to people who failed to follow instructions and sent either nothing or completely invalid presents even after multiple warnings. Reverse searching is most likely equally possible on ChatGPT as it is on Google, but I sure as hell am not letting those machines have any of my data just for the sake of confirming cheating, so I understand why the situation is what it is; the AI users' punishment will be a data breach and a sad recipient... If anyone has the nerve to send me an AI present, I'm pulling out the whips and chains. ᕦ( ⊡ 益 ⊡ )ᕤ

At this point Taylor Swift might as well have more influence than the leaders of most countries in the world, lmao. I don't really understand the hype around her, but missing bandwagons is nothing new to me: since I no longer use most social media, my only source of internet culture is second-hand knowledge from my more chronically online friends. ( ⁰͡ _⁰͡  ) I watch YouTube Shorts pretty often as well: I even have some creators I follow just for their short-form videos! My absolute favorite is a guy called Drew Talbert. He has a whole cinematic universe dedicated to comedy skits about restaurant culture in America, and he's an insanely talented actor!! I'm so invested in the lore I always forget it's just him playing the characters, haha. I have nothing against short form content itself – TikTok is just an especially toxic and predatory platform. The advanced algorithm and the countless specific "sides" of TikTok fuel the escalation of a black and white polarized society. The userbase has absolutely no filter when it comes to hateful comments and actions, and the more radical creators aren't any better. With the rise of so-called ragebait content, a bunch of clout-hungry maniacs are now out in the streets doing dumb things in public or even recording total strangers without their permission. The harmful effects of TikTok are no longer something that only affect its users! Then there's also the topic of inappropriate and/or false advertising, which is a growing problem on every media platform due to the fact that most of them accept anything on their site as long as it's being paid for, but the detrimental advertisements such as diet supplements or excessive filter applications seem to be an especially big issue on TikTok – an application mainly used by insecure teenagers. (。•́︿•̀。) I could go on forever about the things I hate about the goddamn clock app forever, but I'll spare you from further fury.

I've never been interested in the watching/reading challenges. I feel like any kind of external pressure will ruin my experience – I'm already a completionist in recovery! I don't need any more pressure to force myself through things I don't enjoy. As I'm getting closer to 500 completed, I've unfortunately noticed that habit starting to build up again... (ಠಿ _ ಠಿ)୨

Haha, that sentence reminds me of my old profile. I wonder if it was intentional on your part? Speaking of profiles, I just updated my layout a few months ago, but I already feel like making a new one. It's so much work, but I want a maximalist casinocore layout so bad!! (´ A ` ʃƪ) Any updates on the job grind?

I feel like this was a fairly gloomy reply, so let me lighten the mood with my favorite icebreaker question invented by yours truly: which letter of the alphabet is the sexiest and why? The reasoning can be anything from the sound to the shape to the fact that it is the first letter of your celebrity crush's name. (ゝ∀ •́)ᕤ☆
gyanburubii Jan 21, 1:21 PM
Well, it was a bit of both. It's obviously annoying to deal with, but also funny because they're just digging their own graves by intentionally sending invalid submissions – blacklisting hopeless users was so satisfying. Hope they do better next year... oh wait, they can't! ψ(≖`∇´≖)ψ I wish more researchers and experts would speak up about the dangers of being overly reliant on artificial intelligence. I feel like everywhere I go, the use of AI is only being mindlessly encouraged... There are three things currently existing in this world I'll forever be passionately against: advanced AI (also includes humanoid robots), NFTs and TikTok.

Having your recommendation added to favorites is the ultimate honor! (人 ⁰ヮ⁰)✧ The sharpness of the art style indeed compliments the dangerous atmosphere of the story really well, but even though I've personally learned to love it, I'd never recommend it to someone unless I knew for sure that they weren't bothered by unorthodox visuals. Giving it as an only recommendation is pretty daring. (‘◉ Д ◉’) I actually got one of my closest friends to finally watch Kaiji this week, haha. He complained a lot during the first arc but ended up liking the first season due to its unique narrative and unpredictability. He happens to be the type of person to place himself above the characters and condemn them for not choosing the most logical way to act, which has always been a pet peeve of mine. The quickest way to ruin a show for oneself is thinking about it too seriously: anything that is born from imagination cannot make perfect sense, and a little plot convenience is necessary to move the story forward in most cases. One thing he kept bringing up is how "Kaiji should have just gotten a normal job to pay off the debt". I had to remind him multiple times of the fact that the story is set in 1990's Japan – telling someone to "just get a job" during a period of major economic decline is basically the same as commanding a homeless person to go buy a house, lmao. Besides, the situations Kaiji gets himself into are all in line with his character and personality. He has an insane ingrained sense of justice and is someone who finds meaning to his life in the risks he takes; it's essentially a tragic revenge story about a guy who got addicted to the journey itself. You know how the edgelord main characters in dark fantasies always feel empty after they've carried out their vengeance? Kaiji is a bit like that with gambling, which is why he keeps going back despite knowing fully well how insane it is. Addiction doesn't follow reason.

I know right! I ended up finishing Kazuya-hen on the same day I sent my latest message, and the fact that Mitsuyama actually betrayed the other two was so unexpected!? (ʘᗩʘ’) Even though no one lost their lives, Kaiji definitely lost that gamble, and I genuinely couldn't see the outcome until the moment it was revealed. I'm so excited to see how the manga eventually ends!! I feel like there are so many satisfying ways to conclude Kaiji's story: I can imagine him both succeeding in his rematch with Hyōdō or dying trying. (人 ✧o✧)

I recommended three shows to my main anime recipient: Yuukoku no Moriarty, Paripi Koumei and Inuyashiki. He had a very broad request and seemed to enjoy all kinds of things. Still, one thing that stood out to me was his love of mind games, so I recommended him something I was obsessed with during the event period and still think is absolutely amazing suspenseful, something fun and something edgy all within that big brain territory. For my manga recipient I went with one of my all-time favorites, Asper Kanojo, because he seemed like the type of person who would appreciate how intricately it manages to portray neurodivergence and mental illness. Both of them messaged me back and said they've enjoyed my recommendations so far, so I'm calling it a success! ദ്ദി ゝ؎ •)✧ Most of my backup recipients never reached out, so I can't really assess those, but all of them got three shows each as well.

If your chemistry already clashes with the interviewer, maybe it's a sign that you wouldn't feel comfortable in that work environment altogether? o(´^`)o It's really cold here and all I do is sleep all day, so your theory may not be too far off. Summer is always the worst season for anime, which is why it sucks that it's also the season with the most time to spare, lol. Two of my all-time favorite shows aired in summer, but besides Mob Psycho 100 and Saiki Kusuo no Psi Nan, I need no more than the fingers on my hands to count how many summer series I've rated an 8 or higher. ┐( ˘_˘)┌

I wasn't present to witness the previous years, but the more experienced elves said that the workload was significantly lessened this year compared to before. There were still some gifts that needed fixing of course and even some people who were downright trolling, but the majority were accepted on first submission – at least in the team I worked in. Our biggest problem this year was probably AI presents... (ノ ̄皿 ̄)ノ Words don't begin to describe how much I loathe the growing usage of artificial intelligence, ESPECIALLY when it comes to creative work such as art, music or writing. Speaking of AI, I'm losing my mind over the goddamn subtitle localization debate. It's just a bunch of morons who likely speak only English not having enough braincells to understand the concept of translating... ლ(ಠ益ಠლ) You can't translate things word-to-word, it would make no sense! Substituting certain concepts is literally done to prevent things such as humor, slang and cultural references from getting lost in translation!! Subtitles use words like "mid" or "sus" because they're the best English equivalents to whichever Japanese slang word the character used... I can't believe some people are so stuck up and determined to prevent "an agenda" that they'd rather read soulless subtitles that suck the joy out of a story. (⇀‸↼)

I don't think Wi-Fi has ever been as big of a deal here as it is in the countries who don't use widespread unlimited data plans. I relate to being lazier with anime though! (╥﹏╥)

Well, it doesn't surprise me they liked it with you having given such a tasteful gift!! I started reading the Kaiji manga from where the anime left off a while ago as well. I keep wishing I could rewatch the show without knowing anything about it, but that's not possible, so I decided to delve into the unadapted content, haha. I'm in the middle of Kazuya-hen right now, but it's been a while since I last read a chapter. Fortunately, Kaiji is pretty simple, so I'm sure I'll get right back to it once I continue! ( ꈍᴗꈍ) I really appreciate the way Kaiji is both exciting yet really easy to read and digest thanks to the repertition meant to emphasize important events; it's one thing that works better in the manga compared to the adaptation. Usually reading manga is quite a long process for me because I space out easily which leads to having to reread many speech bubbles – in Kaiji that isn't necessary, since the important things are said multiple times anyway. (˵¬▽¬˵) I also think Kaiji is a compelling protagonist! The way he's simultaneously a reckless risk-taker yet kind of pathetic and super gullible is such an interesting contradiction. He's not perfect and sometimes makes poor decisions but whenever he gets lucky, it's easy to believe because at his core he's the kind of guy who trusts others and wants to see the best in people, so karma rewards him for that. ( -`ᴗ´-)୨ However, the thing I appreciate the most is how he doesn't win all of his gambles – that alone makes Kaiji more thrilling than about 90% of gambling media out there already. It's so cool how the narrative manages to play around between a false sense of security and being confident of an upcoming loss!! It's only made possible by the fact that the outcome can genuinely turn out either way. Most stories lose their excitement factor as soon as you realize the main character just always bullshits their way to victory somehow. Kaiji preaching over.

You will smash it!! (人 >_<) What kind of a job are you applying for, if you don't mind me asking? Yeah, I'm aware. I don't really watch live action series, but the first episode of the anime showed a lot of potential. Can't wait for the fluff to kick in! It's one of the few shows I'll stick with for sure this season – I'm always laziest with winter anime for some reason.
gyanburubii Jan 10, 9:44 AM
What a naughty recipient, not properly updating the recommendation on your list for your Santa to stalk! (*´艸`*) Since I did backup gifts as an elf, I've had a bunch of profiles to keep up with this year, lol.

I only became an anime fan during the era of KissAnime, so I wouldn't know about that, haha. I think both recommendation styles have their advantages. I appreciate getting longer messages and being able to pick among good variety, but getting just one is more convenient, because that eliminates the difficulty in choosing. Did I already ask which titles you recommended to your recipients? I didn't, right? My memory isn't that poor... right?? ( ꏿロꏿ;)

Good luck with interviews! I'll surely be keeping myself distracted this winter with Cherry Magic! I'm beyond excited to have another anime adaptation with an actually healthy gay couple, none of that gross non-con yaoi bullshit. (ಠ︵ಠ) I also really loved Atarashii Joushi wa Do Tennen last season, and the trailers of Cherry Magic have been giving me similar vibes.
gyanburubii Jan 2, 6:24 AM
I read Bastard a couple years back! All I remember is that I binged it in one day, so either it was really interesting or I was really bored (probably both).

2023 was actually my first year participating in both recommendation editions! From my manga santa I got Akumetsu, which is not bad. It's quite a complex read with all the economic terminology being in English when I can barely understand the words in Finnish, but I'm invested to learn what the hell is up with the protagonist, haha. It's also a manga I hadn't heard of before, which is cool! As for anime, I got three recommendations (Zetsuen no Tempest, Kamisama no Memochou and Shinreigari) and, well... you can look at the stats section on the web version to see what I thought. ( ಠ﹏ಠ) However, being on the receiving end of gifts isn’t what I prioritize – I'm just looking forward to meeting my santas and recipients on the 6th of January! (^ ワ ^)

New Years went by so abruptly I barely realized it was even happening! It gets more insignificant the older I get. Back when I was little, it used to be my favorite celebration because I got to eat fast food and stay up late. Nowadays, when those things have become commonplace regardless, the only special thing that remains is the slight, creeping existential dread of the unavoidable passing of time... ( ತ_ತ)

Haha, same. I'm finally officially graduating next week (Dec 5th), which will also make me a real bona fide NEET for a while. It's not really something to be proud of, but that title sure feels like my own! I've been sick constantly and days are passing by so quickly I'm not even sure what's happening out there anymore. On top of that I'll have to start thinking about moving out from my parents' place soon as well, and that's yet another one of those terrifying uncertainties on topic... Fortunately December is usually a pretty nice month! Even though I'm not that much of a Christmas person, I have to admit that there's something special, almost nostalgic, in the atmosphere during the last month of the year. Does that feeling sound familiar? I'm also excited for December because I did end up volunteering as an elf for the MAL Secret Santa event this year – I'll finally be able to make myself and all this rotting time useful, lmao. It's been a few months so you might be in a different position by now, but good luck with job hunting in case you still need it!!
( b >ᴗ<)b

Exactly! Survival is not the objective in Zom100, which is exactly what sets it apart from other post-apocalyptic stories. I really wanted to give it the love it deserves, but unfortunately all of the delays have kind of killed my hype for the show. (。•́︿•̀。) The quality of the story has dropped either way, so I doubt the show would've been a 10/10 for me even if it aired on a regular schedule, but the irony of having the animators work on a story like this from the very conditions the show is supposed to criticize is almost insulting...

Don't worry about it! Even if some topics, things or opinions repeat, my memory could likely use some refreshing regardless – we have been in contact for almost two years after all!

PS. Sorry for taking literally a million months to reply. My ability to communicate has regressed after being isolated for so long... ლ(ಥ‿ಥ ლ) <-- tears of an awkward extrovert
gyanburubii Aug 11, 2023 3:56 PM
Congratulations on your graduation!! (人 ╹▽╹ ) I feel you. Having a lot of free time can be paralyzing: I'm at a stage in my studies where I've had pretty much no responsibilities since around February, which has left me with an abundance of idle time. However, as a person with nothing going on and lifelong aspirations as vague and abstract as "find happiness and hopefully a partner", I can't come up with anything to use that time on right now. An opportunity like this may never come again yet I'm just stuck in place, existing but not really even that... (*﹏*;) Although I did check one thing off my "would be cool to be able to do one day but we'll see if I ever get around to it" list though by picking up riichi mahjong over the summer – I have the flexing rights now! (⌐■-■) Literally all skills required to be good at it are things I don't possess naturally but I like the game a lot regardless. It's quite unusual given how I usually tend to be impatient when it comes to learning new things if I'm not instantly good at it.

Bwahaha, I'm actually a huge fan of the show thus far and have been losing my braincells over everyone taking it too seriously. I myself have never been strict about fiction having to adhere to the conveniences of the real world – often times a little plot convenience here and there is necessary to move a story and make it interesting after all. Also, the more invested I am in a show, the more I try to fill the holes in by myself! Not every detail has to be served to the viewer on a silver platter. (눈ᴥ눈) I'm an absolute sucker for the kind of stories with extreme tonal shifts that will make me both laugh and cry in a matter of minutes in general. There's just something humanely comforting about being allowed and able to feel such a varying scale of emotions and every episode of Zom100 so far has left me feeling almost enlightened with its philosophical conclusions and the range of chemical reactions it's letting my brain experience. I feel like you have to be in a certain state of mind to truly be able to appreciate everything the show is saying and how it's saying it – it just happens to be airing at the perfect time for me to fall under that exact audience the narrative is targeting. It's by no means a perfect show, but if it continues its appeal until the end it just might become a personal masterpiece for me. (*´ω`*) Also, it's actually not a shōnen but a seinen! One thing I really like about it is how subversive of expectations Akira is – he does feel like a shōnen protagonist, but at the same time he's kind of an antihero (a trope more suited towards seinen shows even though it's becoming increasingly common in shōnen as well) with how hauntingly peculiar his mindset towards the whole global disaster is. That's where the true horror lies... I feel like the genius behind all of those little details isn't getting enough love! I have so much to say about this show I've even considered the option of writing a review after it's concluded.
gyanburubii Aug 7, 2023 1:48 AM
Hehe, thank you!! It's been pretty long since the last one, I've missed our conversations a bit. (*´∀`*) Hopefully all is fine on your end as well.

I see you've been keeping up with some seasonals this summer! Are you enjoying Zom100? (ʘᴗʘ✿)

The event is getting more popular, so it's only natural there are more dropouts as well. I still feel really bad for the organizers... (T__T) I would've volunteered as an anime elf for the 2022 edition, however, producer duty called thus I spent my pre-holidays grinding for Rinne's long-due 5* event instead! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*.✧ I'm on the MAL Discord and apparently the manga edition is the last thing holding the gifts back. I'm more of a giver than receiver when it comes to gifts, so I'm looking forward to my recipient's reaction! I got a fun idea for it this year after seeing their profile and they seem like the kind of person who could appreciate the extra effort I put into personalizing it.

うん、その日が早く来る欲しいなぁ。ブブウ、正解は。。。 ENTPです!I don't want to be that guy but I'm going to be that guy: the 16personalities test isn't actually Myers-Briggs at all, so the additional letter is pointless. ┐(´д`)┌ While I do think that you certainly possess INTP-like qualities, I recommend taking a test based on the actual theory behind Myers-Briggs. For example, the Sakinorva test is quite a well acclaimed one that gives proper, comparable insight on the way you use cognitive functions!

Haha, it's definitely part of it. I like Rinne for as large of a variety of reasons as is the depth of his character, but one thing I'm especially weak for is the hedonistic adrenaline junkie attitude and with that the mentality of being able to greet any circumstances with a grin, prepared for a challenge. (´∩。^ ᵕ ^。∩`) I've since long been interested in the history and theoretical aspects behind gambling as well as the psychology and thrill of it, so I'd dare to argue that the interest came first and Rinne has merely amplified it. My experiences of gambling are mostly second-hand for now (except for gacha which I actually quite dislike, the thrills are nonexistent and it's solely reliant on luck which I don't have), but if I had to compare the specific emotion of being in a gambler's mindset to something, it's pretty close to the feeling I got watching Japan's games in men's FIFA World Cup this year!!! Even though the circumstances around the competition were certainly not ideal, Blue Lock evoked my curiosity and... it was the first time real sports has ever made me feel as excited! \(☆∆☆)/ Since then I've found myself longing for those thrills once more. Sports is an entirely different experience when you're wholeheartedly rooting for someone!! That's why I'm actually considering about getting into sports betting – it seems like the kind of gambling that'd give me some payoff regardless of whether I win or not. Even if I lose the bet, I'd still get the second-hand adrenaline from watching the game with a clear favorite in mind. ୧(。•̀ڡ-)☆ Do you like to watch sports?

Yeah, I read the manga in 2021! From what I still remember of it, the games were fairly interesting and Arisu's character development was tangible. The TV adaptation seems great, but I have a fatal disease called simply being unable to focus on anything that isn't anime... (´–﹏–`;)ゞ
