I learned to speak Eureka as Aristotle said it: as Yoo-rhee-ka, not eh-oo-rae-ka. But then again, I'm just joking around. No matter how much I pretend to make fun of Eureka's name pronunciation, I will always love this anime from the bottom of my heart. As someone who watched the whole first season, I will give you a SPOILER. Not one on the story, but one on the music. The music is PHENOMENAL!!! Here is a link to one of the most amazing emotional anime ost you will ever hear. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BCZ64DxnrA
Seriously, just listen to it and concentrate it on only it. Stop reading this review
...
and just listen to it first. Then come back if you want to continue to read my review. If you don't I don't care. What I care about is that you COPIED that URL and PASTED it on a new TAB. Then LISTENING to the music. My favorite is Distant memory and To Wish Upon a Star. The order is listed on the youtube description.
Anywho, after that tangent, there are several faults within this anime, however, I really enjoyed the plot. Albeit, I could not understand the whole background of the story until the final few episodes of the anime. If you are looking for a clear story line without any hidden messages or sidetracks then you will get ABSOLUTELY frustrated. I did at some points because it got so frickin slow. However, it was worth the wait because the background of the story is so complex and amazing that it was worth not understanding the whole concept behind Eureka and other things for 46ish episodes. The background story might also be too complicated that some people will have to wiki it. The story is good and the staff even added Fyodor Dostoevsky's work, "Crime and Punishment" within the anime, although it was only a couple lines.
One thing I did not like from the anime is the characters. Renton is the male protagonist of the anime. I do know that he is young but sometimes, he really acts immature. Although I say I don't like it, I also like it because the emotions and the characters are real and flawed. Nothing is artificial. Almost all of the problems are real and the emotions do get dirty because that is how it is in real life. Nothing is superficial and everything is down to Earth. well, maybe except when they fly on skateboards. The emotions are intense and dramatic in both the children, teenagers, and adults, and that is what makes this anime very different from the rest. To the characters, it really means the life to them. I'm not saying that there aren't any other anime that show genuine emotions through the anime characters. It is just that the characters are really flawed and set in their own ways that is different from other anime. To me that is what set this anime apart from others.
Art is amazing. I always wondered how they can create such a masterpiece through one drawing at a time.
In short, if you see this anime and don't fall in love with the music, ... we're never going to be friends. Bye bye. Go listen. Simply awesome.

Do you like anime? Of course you do, otherwise you wouldn't be on this website and reading this review. Shirobako really hooked me in with the first few episodes. I've already watched it twice and it doesn't get any worse. As one of the millions of avid anime fans out there in the world, Shirobako allows me and others to glance into the production stages of anime and how everything gets mashed up together to build our 22 minute long joy. Through Shirobako, I realized that making an anime that is on par and awesome is painstakingly difficult. Every member of the anime staff is
...
like a cog in the machine and everything is organized by the production staff. You also learn the multiple stages and steps it takes for at least one scene. However, Shirobako is not simply an anime that shows simply details about the anime stages, but it also gives an amazing plot.
If you read the synopsis, then you know that 5 girls enter the anime business from different areas: Production, animator, 3-D animator, voice acting, and script writer. However, the story mainly focuses around Miyamori Aoi, who is part of the production staff of a studio. She has her own set of struggles besides the ones she receives by being part of the production staff. Her issues are genuine and maybe reflective of what some people feel like in their actual real jobs in the real world. Additionally, the struggles that the studio faces with the anime they are producing seems real and not at all fake. The life of the production staff is not clean and nice, and everyday there is always a problem.
Although the content of Shirobako tend to be serious, the anime has a variety of comedic scenes. Miyamori has these two dolls who discuss the serious issues in a comedic routine and of course, this is in her head. The dolls mostly are used to explain the specific details and phrases that the anime production world uses. SPOILER. There is a scene with one of Miyamori's friend and she does this cute dance, and it is things like these that make me laugh and enjoy the anime. Anyway, there are a lot of funny scenes to look forward to in this anime.
The most amazing part of the anime is that the studio is making an anime inside an anime. It's like when you see a movie that is about making a movie. However, it is much more impressive with an anime since you have to draw everything and have a new set of sounds, and art. It simply amazes how Shirobako manages to make the anime look good and have all the art be laid out for us to see. I mean it just looks so damn good and very hard to do. Just watch and you'll know what I'm talking about. You will ask, "How do they do that???"
All of the characters are lovable except for one guy, and you will know who that is once you see the first episode. You also will start to want the 5 girls to fulfill their dream one day. Then wishing for a second season because this anime is simply just awesome and eye-opening.

Where to begin... First of all, I saw this from someone else's recommendation and I got to say: anyone who did not watch this anime definitely should. This anime is one of the few that affected me in real life (another one is Psycho-pass). I chose Shinsekai yori as my first anime review because that is simply how good this anime is. It isn't mainstream and action packed with blazing fights. This anime is on a whole different level than most of the other ones I watched and its unorthodox elements captivated and drew me in the anime even more. It makes you do a
...
lot of thinking and can change what your beliefs are if it is that influential. Once you have seen it, you can't brush it off as another anime that you've watched. It will stick with you and you will ponder about it for a long time. (Some spoilers, but not too much)
The beginning of the anime started out as creepy and dark, but it did well to build up the suspense and the story later on. It might be a little confusing to understand the plot and the setting of the story but after a few episodes you understand when the story is taking place, how the people get there, and what they are talking about. The story is filled with elements of an utopia, dystopia, murder, adventure, ESP, horror, romance, and others. However, the things that struck me most were the horror parts of the story. The thriller suspense made me shiver and cold sweats were beading down my face. It also made me want to skip some parts of the episodes.
The story has some time slips with the focus on the protagonist, Saki, and with her, we can see the growth of a child and how she grew up from this world that is beginning to seem twisted in her mind. We can see the influence of the world it has on Saki and her group of friends, as they all begin to change and develop into significant characters. Saki, above all, is the greatest protagonist as you see her growth into an adult and mature mindset. You would assume that this is a world with only humans but you later realize that there is another sentient foreign species that revere the humans as gods. It is also quite interesting that this story introduces the policies and treatment of foreign species, and we can easily reflect that to real life events. As a result, this anime isn't simply superficial but the author of the novel tried to incorporate aspects of the real world to the anime.
All in all, the art was great, the story fantastic, the music adding to the suspense and thriller, the characters were outstanding (even the nonhumans), and I really, really enjoyed it. 10/10.
Hope you had fun reading my first review and ultimately see this amazing anime. Shinsekai yori FTW.
