About spiderjerusalem
Fighter of the Month (October): Andre "S.O.G." Ward

Finish of the Month (October): When Vinny locks you down, you are definitely going to tap.

If you've never seen, heard, and read anything made before 1990, then your opinion really doesn't matter to me.

Grading Scale
*note - this is simply how I view these scores. A 5 for me might be a 7 for you, and vice-versa. I believe nearly all animated works have some merit, so if you disagree with a score of mine, feel free to tell me why.

10 - As close to perfection as possible. One of a kind. Must see.
9 - Next best thing to a masterpiece. Either did almost everything it wanted to perfectly, or surpassed its limits
8 - A great work, definitely enjoyable and shows clear merit.
7 - A solid above average work. Nothing significant, but definitely has ambition.
6 - Decent work. Nothing noteworthy.
5 - Average. Stagnating in between good and bad.
4 - Definite merit in some aspect, but not a good work at all.
3 - Very little ambition though there is clear effort, takes no risk and is purely mediocre/bad.
2 - There is minimal effort and/or the work had promise, but fell apart badly in some or most aspects.
1 - Absolutely no merit, artistic or otherwise. Better off never having been made.

Perfect 10's

UNFORGIVABLE (A score of 1)

My name is Marc and I like things that are awesome; like MMA, good music, comic books, and the occasional animu and mango.

Real men override stage music with their JAM Project theme song.

NO FEAR NO PAIN

"No. You know what? I DON'T apologize. If you liked Elfen Lied, you have no taste and you need to be institutionalized." XD, This is going to get you in trouble with the Elfen Lied fanboys out there LOLOLOLOL

Manganiaque | 10-25-12, 5:38 PM
Sorry for the very late reply, but I've been kinda busy these past weeks.

Okay, but before "bringing up my points as to why Elfen Lied is a good series", I have to comment some of the allegations you've made in your previous post.
I haven't "attempted a dialogue regarding the series or asked what it is that you have disliked about it" for the simple reason that this hasn't been my intention. I've known why you have disliked Elfen Lied from your review and I have never wanted to make you change your mind by trying to convince you; I've only suggested that you might watch it again because I've thought that you've misjudged it.
Since you agree that "fiction is subjective" and "one man's trash is another man's treasure", why on Earth would you consider those who have liked something that you've disliked "morons without taste"?
You've said that I know nothing about you and you're partially right: I only know how you judged an anime that I know very well and how you disregard those who think differently - and all that I've said to you was related only to those obvious things.
You've said also that I shouldn't talk about manners as long as I "vaguely insult you, question your artistic tastes, drop sarcasm frequently", and so on. But it's you who has insulted me all the time - at first alongside everybody who likes Elfen Lied, then directly, calling me an "arrogant blowhard" with a passive-aggressive attitude (you know that this is a personality disorder, right?) and you've also alleged that I'm immature.
You've watched Elfen Lied "in one sitting in one night" - that's about four and a half hours, without the intros and the outros; do you really think that you haven't missed anything from it, no detail, no non-obvious information, during that "marathon"? (And yes, one can hate something without comprehending it; actually, people are prone to hate precisely because they don't understand...) I have the series on DVD and I've watched it twice, two or three episodes in one sitting, rewinding if I couldn't read a quickly changed subtitle to be sure that I've understood everything that was said; so I think that I just might be entitled to speak about the details of that animated story. You haven't liked the series, and, as I've already said, you have every right in the world to feel so; but, as I've also said, don't look down on the people who think differently - or, at least, refrain yourself from saying it to them, because that is something not only in bad taste, but it shows bad manners. (And it doesn't matter that it's only on the Internet...) It's funny that, even though you've permanently disagreed with me about that, you wrote to me: "I suggest you learn to take differing opinions in stride, because it is a very big world out there."
You've also said that for one person who is offended by your review, there are five who support you; I suppose that (correct me if I'm wrong) you want to demonstrate by this that your point of view is largely approved. Then how can you explain that Elfen Lied managed to have an average score of 8,17 on MAL? And that there are more positive than negative reviews? Do you really think that so many of the MAL users are "morons without taste"? (And that's only by restraining the ratings to those of the MAL users.)
Indisputably, there are more important things than an anime and the opinions that we have about it. Certainly, a favorite (or detested) series doesn't really matter. But why would you assume that I take so seriously the fact that we think differently about it? I really don't. I repeat it: it wasn't about what you think about Elfen Lied, it was only about your arrogant attitude. And that is why I've been sarcastic.

Now, about the anime:
You've written in the review that the story is "overtly complicated, totally unbelievable, and tries way too hard", "and it's full of plot holes". Honestly, have you ever watched an anime or a movie or read a novel without any of these drawbacks? I am a novelist, so I can tell if a story is good, acceptable or plain stupid: Elfen Lied is certainly not a masterpiece, but by no means it is a failure as you consider it.
You consider the art "just mediocre as all hell. Everyone has the same face unless they're an adult apparently". Okay, but isn't this a characteristic of most of the anime shows? It's just the way that children and teenagers are drawn by many of the Japanese artists, and since you like anime, it would be only natural that you admit it without making a fuss about it...
"The animation is also pretty bad", you said. I've never noticed something like that, and I am extremely prone to criticism. (This statement makes me think that you are one of those who find everything bad in a show that they dislike...)
You've also called the vectors "the dumbest looking power you've ever seen in an animation". You didn't like "the way they were drawn"; it's your opinion and, regardless of the fact that I disagree with it, this is no reason to consider them another drawback of the series.
And we get to the worst of your review: the criticism over character development. Before writing about Lucy/Nyu, I'll comment on another topic. You wrote: "One example is a group of elementary school kids beating the ever-loving hell out of a dog with no remorse whatsoever. I went to elementary school and I don't remember that many serial killers in training. ... Am I just supposed to believe these kids are all just pure evil at that early an age?" You must be a lucky guy... Yes, some children are that evil. Yes, some children do act that violently. Haven't you ever heard of children who torture to death little animals? (And most of them do it for sheer personal satisfaction, not for bullying another child.) Some time ago I saw a TV reportage about a group of youngsters who posted on the net a film showing themselves beating and repeatedly violently throwing on a building's stairs a cat; of course, they've killed it - and they were not only amused by that horrible action, they were proud of it! Reality, not animated fiction...
Lucy/Nyu - the main character of the series, the one about whom you wrote: "... a girl with horns ... She can only say her name and gets naked too often. Then she goes nuts and kills people. All because it's her nature." Really? Do you really think that this is all about the character? If your answer is "yes", then we have to do with the one thing I've repeatedly said: you've completely missed the details that make this story something entirely different from what you consider it is.
Have you noticed her constant struggle with the insanity that makes her act violently?
Have you noticed that the said insanity was triggered by the way most of the others treated her?
Have you noticed that all she wanted was to be accepted as a normal person and not being considered a freak?
Have you noticed that her innocent, childish Nyu personality was the way she found for subduing her violent/murderous impulses?
Have you noticed that she triggered deliberately the said "Nyu personality" whenever she realised that she was endangering those whom she cared about or simply that being "Lucy" would hurt their feelings?
Have you noticed that the love she felt for Kouta made her stop killing and even regret the evil things that she did?
Have you noticed that, also for that love, she abandoned every plan or even thought of revenge on the humanity that had despised, tortured and (ab)used her?
Have you noticed that the real message of the series is that love can overcome violence, hatred, desire of revenge and even madness?
Well, it had seemed to me that you didn't. Marc, quality anime is all about details and suggestions; Japanese animation doesn't put all the facts that help you understand the story and/or the characters straight in front of your eyes, you must have the patience to discover what it really wants to say, the open-mindedness to perceive and understand its real message...

Ah, right you are! It was just the HD re-release, not an alpha/beta for All-Stars; my bad for quickly glancing at the Shoryuken article and video without reading it more in-depth.

"Miami is now considered the most miserable city in the U.S.! So there's that, haha."

Heh, how is that possible? Hot weather, lovely beaches, attractive women who walk around mostly naked, AND an NBA championship! How does that lend itself to misery?

"Finishing up my last year of college and then starts the job search. Been getting heavier into boxing as well, since MMA is going through a pretty bad phase right now, with a few exceptions."

Why do you think MMA is going through a bad phase? And yeah, boxing is cool, too; I actually used to box as an amateur for two years back in high school. Still, I can't help but shake my head looking at the sport today compared to the second Golden Age it had in the 80s; it's one of the very few sports that has actually regressed in the last 25-30 years.

My last favorite fighter when I was seriously following the sport was Rocky Juarez, and a quick glance at Wikipedia reveals he has already been washed up for two years!

"Moved out and got my own place, which is pretty fun. I don't have any TV so I just use a friend's netflix account. Been watching Twin Peaks, amazing series."

Congratulations, man! Hope you enjoy your new independence and find a great job.

I haven't had a TV since I was 18 and left home. I doubt you will miss it either, especially considering you can watch everything you want on a computer. The only TV shows I have been watching recently is "Pawn Stars", although "Mad Men" is absolutely amazing; the best US series I have ever seen by far.

By the way, I noticed some butthurt Elfen Lied fanboy is crying like a little bitch on your profile because you didn't like it.

My advice is to just to ignore the little fucker and have fun deleting his comments. Just think; he will have spent a long time writing a passionate defense of that garbage series, loaded with passive-aggressive insults, and it will only take you two seconds to delete it all! You wouldn't give a loser like him the time of day in real life, so why waste life replying to him online?

Manganiaque | 09-28-12, 5:13 PM
And you’re still stubborn and you still don't understand what I've repeatedly said to you... *sighs*
Okay, I have to admit that I was somehow impressed by the long comment that you've posted me; not for its content, but by the fact that you've seemed to be interested enough in this controversy to write so much. So, here's my proposition: I'll keep my sarcasm on a short leash, you'll try to be less arrogant, and we'll talk about all this calmly and with all the necessary arguments. Is it alright with you? If you agree with that, I'll answer, point-by-point, to everything that you've wrote.
p.s. You are also wrong assuming that I would "look down on you for your age" - from the 28 friends that I have here on MAL (and I always refuse random requests that aren't followed by a chat), 24 are teenagers or in their early twenties...

YoungVagabond | 09-28-12, 12:44 AM
Yeah, I saw a video yesterday of Daigo and Tokido trying the game out! I'm glad it's getting this much attention in the fighting game community.

I've been well, thank you! What about yourself? Is Florida still awesome this time of year?

Manganiaque | 09-25-12, 2:48 PM
From six months to less than two hours - that’s a real improvement! Well done, Marc!
It seems that you confound sarcasm and insults. On the other hand, it’s only natural for you to say that I haven’t „got my point across” since you have missed it again, proving that I was right about you: your perception is shallow. At first, considering the way that you’ve paid no attention at all to the relevant details of that anime, I’ve suspected that your lack of understanding was simply due to immaturity, but - as more than three years have passed since you wrote the review - apparently this inability to comprehend otherwise than superficially is something that characterizes you.
p.s. Don’t give me that BS about „having the right to look down on others”, that just makes me think of a saying in my country: "a fool isn't fool enough until he's also conceited"... (Okay, now I’ve insulted you.)

Manganiaque | 09-23-12, 2:26 PM
Well, it has taken you half a year to come up with this lame reply. But the real problem is that you haven't understood anything from my comment.
Everyone is free to like or dislike whatever she/he pleases - that’s why nobody has the right to consider herself/himself superior to the ones who have different tastes, or to insult them. So it's not just about an anime: it’s about manners.

Alfonse | 08-15-12, 10:28 PM
Just wondering, what plot holes did you find in Elfen Lied?

D-HATROSS | 05-16-12, 2:37 PM
nice favorites!

Manganiaque | 03-07-12, 9:46 AM
Hello!
I have read your review on Elfen Lied and I really must thank you for insulting me and all the other people who have liked this anime.
About being a moron, I’m ready anytime to take an IQ test together with you and I’m not in the least concerned with the result.
About having no taste, what was the latest art exhibition that you have visited?
Oh, you were just joking? Sorry about that, it was a little bit difficult to notice.
One more thing: you were 19 years old when you wrote the review. Perhaps it would be a good idea to rewatch the anime paying more attention to the details that you have completely missed back then. And if you still find it as bad as you thought when you have watched it for the first time, then just try to take into consideration a simple fact: people who do not share your tastes aren’t necessarily idiots.

Otaku-Ninja8 | 02-16-12, 5:50 PM
Hey I just found a new club you should check out called, MMA Fans of MAL, might as well as join so we can get more members lol

Otaku-Ninja8 | 02-05-12, 3:13 PM
I saw the results but didnt see the fights. How'd Condit end up with the decision?

Otaku-Ninja8 | 02-03-12, 8:26 PM
Any predictions for Carlos and condit? I'm giving it to condit via 2nd round tko

Canadianfag | 02-02-12, 9:24 PM
Spider Jeruselum? WHY HAVEN'T YOU GOT YOUR FUCKING ARTICLE IN YET!!??

Otaku-Ninja8 | 01-17-12, 9:32 PM
Ya I'm pretty convinced Lesnar was just there for the money. I wouldn't be surprised to hear he went back to the WWE. You watch the fights last weekend? There was this one guy who knocked the other guy out with a roundhouse! It was pretty wicked. The rest of the fights were so-so, even though Aldo got a knock out too.
