My 9.9 Scale Ratings Explained:
Ratings:
While MAL only allows integer values in scoring animes (Standard Rating), sometimes this is not enough to fully distinguish animes when comparing apples to apples. To counter that, I also score animes in the "tags" column an Actual Rating. This rating goes one step further and allows me to score an anime to an extra decimal place. So while an 8.9 and a 9.4 will all be a "9" under standard conditions, an actual score will reflect further differences in overall anime quality and enjoyment.
I rate animes on a 5 point scale. A show will either be 7,8,9, or 10.
The fifth point of the scale would be anything rated at a 6 or less - these shows will usually be dropped by me because either it has disengaging plots, unoriginality to an extreme extent, bore-some character personalities, utterly unrealistic advance of plots, questionable content which defies social norm, or (God forbid) all of the above.
10/10 (Five Stars; Actual Rating >9.5) - While I firmly believe perfection is not an achievable trait in anything, there are certainly some things in this world which creep infinitesimally close to the alluring "perfection" - anime is no exception. Animes which have achieved a ten on the list will have (almost) full marks given in each of the categories:
Overall plot togetherness
Character development
Enticing scenery execution throughout (to keep viewer glued to his computer screen)
Realistic flow of story (under fictional circumstances if necessary)
Realistic characters (along with their back-stories, personalities and living condition)
Little or no use of, or of little reliance on generic plot devices, overused gimmicks, or any other cheap and avoidable tricks (i.e. panty shots) to forcefully and unnaturally drive the plot forward
Failure of enough magnitude in any of the above categories will severely damage an anime's rating and subsequently a significant drop in rating will be reflected. Because of this, the difference between a "9" and "10" is exponential.
With that said, animes with a standard rating of 10 will have its viewers glued to the screen during every minute, have a plot that's both realistic and enticing, keeps the viewer engaged with its constantly unpredictable plot(s), leaving (almost) zero plot holes behind with its well organized story flow; and ultimately leaves the viewer satisfied to an extent at which he feels comfortable at when the final credits role.
9/10 (Four Stars; Actual Rating 8.9 - 9.5) - A truly magnificent anime that excels in great story-telling with realistic characters, plot, and setting. Trying to criticize an anime in this category will be very difficult but not entirely impossible. It will have some minor (but notable) flaws which prevents it from achieving a "perfect" score. Storyline wise, it should be packed with plot and or character development and will have little to no episodes wasted on gratuitous scenes. Criticizing aside, these animes will be enjoyable from start to finish; whether its appealing attribute(s) be comedy, action and adventure, thick and provoking plots, or a seamless combination of the above, the anime as a whole leaves the viewers content and they should feel their time has not been wasted.
8/10 (Three Stars; Actual Rating 7.9 - 8.9) - A majority of animes that I start watching will have this score: mainly because I dislike watching anything that's even a "7" on my rating; and most the first few episodes of most anime won't be appealing enough to move it up to a "9". I treat this category as the "middle-grounds"; just as the name implies, animes in this range won't be a masterpiece by a long shot; but it's storyline is appealing enough to keep me interested and engaged without yawning. Because this scoring range is treated exponentially lesser than that of a "9 or 10", I am allowed to be more lenient when considering the anime as a whole. Certain negative characteristics such as plot holes unrealistic character traits, very miniscule amounts of fan-service, amongst other details, which were once forbidden, are now allowed - but still only in minor amounts; these flaws should not be notable enough to affect one's overall experience of the anime. After watching the anime, the viewer should still be satisfied with (majority of) the story and character progression as a whole, but may feel that certain mechanics of the anime could have been improved upon to make the show more enjoyable.
7/10 (Two Stars; Actual Rating 6.9 - 7.9) - An "okay" anime with nothing too redeeming to boast about. Majority of animes in this bracket will have most likely started off strong or have had a promising plot to support it. Then as the episodes progressed, certain developments may have occurred to negatively affect the anime: either it be inconsistent themes, slower (or faster) than expected plot advancement, poor character development, amongst other traits are all possibilities for an anime series to have slided downhill since its initial airing. But in all, an anime scored within this range will still be good; however, rest assured that there will be many better titles in its genre that should take precedence over the anime in question.
1-6/10 (One Star; Actual Rating 0.1 - 6.8) - Rarely will I be watching anything rated this; just as there are a lot of traits that make an anime good, an equal (or greater) amount of traits can make an anime bad, worst, or just downright terrible. These can include but certainly not limited to over-usage of cliches, reliance of cheap tricks such as panty shots as a means of a plot device, little or no plot to keep viewer actively engaged, uninteresting, utterly unrealistic characters, and so on. While these shows may be liked by others (who I consider as an entire sub-culture of anime watchers because of their sheer strangeness for liking such animes), they are more often than not unsuitable for normal audiences who expects their time not to be wasted by something that could have been better but decided to go the generic and cliche filled route.

Hey Souske, I'm starting to wonder the same thing about anime list views.
Is it possible that the Mal.Oko charts we have in our profiles refresh from the list and count as a view?
