Sorry for the slow response speed. It's ironic how I go on for 10+ paragraphs to people who can't be arsed to respond, moaning about them, and then find myself unable to respond to a long message. I'm a weird guy, me.

There aren't many anime or manga out there focused close to 100% on story and characterization; you're right. While I can't attack fan service when I'm partial to it myself from time to time, there needs to be less boobs and more realism. I'm reading manga atm to see the more realistic side of the medium.

Going on the start, you have to wonder if the final product matches up with the original intent of the author. At first you can be forgiven for thinking Onani was intended to be just something for laughs; something for DN fans to have a giggle about. There's little hint in the opening chapter of what's to come, the 'Light faces' and masturbation appearing to be all it had to offer. Then, out of nowhere, bullying came into the picture, acts of vengence involving masturbation and Light-esque planning/explanations occurred and, to complete the change, Takigawa entered the frame as a possible (and belivable) love interest for the anti-social lead. Reading it, it seemed like the author went, "Screw it; I can do better than a cheap DN parody!"

Kurosawa was an excellent character, I must agree. I found his change to be somewhat unrealistic after he'd lived in isolation for his whole life and was at his lowest at that stage, but it moved me regardless. Would you have had the balls to stand in front of 60 of your peers and confess to doing what he did to the girls in his class? I know I wouldn't have! The way he decided to take the punishment like a man after seeing how wrong he was to hurt Takigawa - when he had a breakdown after seeing her painting - made me respect him. Up until then I could relate to, feel sorry for and understand him, but it was his actions that made me add him to my favourite character list.

Speaking of Takigawa, I have an issue with her sudden relationship with the afro otaku. Up to that point, she'd been shown somewhat agressively chasing after Kurosawa, going to talk to him in the library when possible and even asking him out on a date; going to see a movie and eating out with him... But then, after talking about finding her soulmate in a misleading manner, she got with someone else, totally out of the blue. I'm aware the passing of time was distorted because of the short length of the manga, and that she'd been going to cram school with the afro guy, but still... she came across as a bit of bitch for playing with poor Kurosawa the way she did. I know it was unintentional on her part - she just being nice in general - but I couldn't help feeling sorry for Kurosawa. I was actually thinking of adding her to my top character list at one point...

On the flipside, at least her actions turned out to be vital to Kurosawa; being the trigger for him changing his life and moving away from his masturbation fantasies. If she had gone with him when he was still within himself, then their relationship probably wouldn't have last because of his small world, so it was probably for the best he suffered the heartbreak he did.

Yes, it was an excelent idea; using masturbation to highlight the failings of Kurosawa. His whole world was the girls' bathroom and his fantasies; masturbation being his own form of escapism. Rather than his fantasies being used for pornographic reasons, they were used tastefully, and they conveyed how Kurosawa looked down on others; dominating the girls in his mind rather than loving them.
On a sidenote, I thought it was powerful when, after Takigawa's sucker punch, he had a fantasy about her, where she remained lifeless as he had sex with her. It highlighted how their relationship wouldn't have worked; that only he looked at her in a lustful way and desired her as a partner.

I wish there was more manga out there like NHK and Onani; stories I can relate to, with leads that aren't spiky-haired heroes who can do anything if they try. I could relate to Satou because of his lifestyle and how he gave into fear, where as I could relate to Kurosawa because of how he looked down on others, ignoring his own flaws and having no interest in others to avoid getting hurt. If you know of any other similar titles, let me know - I'll give 'em a read. :)

Don't worry if you can't be bothered to reply; it's my fault for taking forever to get back to you. Right now I'm not really in a social mood. I started Onani because I want to read manga instead of chatting, and I only recc'd it out of shock at its quality. I will try to get back to you if you drop another message my way, though.

No worries. I'm glad I helped. I didn't want to do a review because of numerous reasons... but I did want to bring it to the attention of others, so I figured a mini-review posted as a recommendation would be for the best. And, going on your comment and the amount of people that added it after my recc, I think it was.

It's good to see you proved me right on two points: the first being that NHK fans would like it if they gave it a chance and the second being that most would probably add it to their top manga list after reading it. Here's hoping that, at some stage, we'll be able to buy it and own it in physical form. :)

What was your favourite part? I think mine was the Kurosawa 'sucker punch'; when Takigawa got with someone else. That was the moment I became certain I was reading something truly excellent.
