I'm not really saying he should have "developed", just that he is what he is, and I'll never really be able to prefer him to a lot of other characters I like; but I guess much of that is a game of apples and oranges, anyway.
Oh yeah, that's great. I always kinda roll my eyes when people with typical Western media influences think every main character should be manly and alpha as fuck. It gets old after a while if that character is constantly the focus. I like seeing weak nice guys do well because I feel like I am a weak nice guy sometimes, etc.

Yeah but Kamina was always the way he was, wheras Simon had character development to get him there, albeit pushed by Kamina's death. My view on Kamina is usually that I see him as more of a character-as-plot-device, rather than an actual character. I thought the series really picked up after he died, because IT HAD TO. The guy served his purpose well, and I liked him for everything he represented.

I do like how I have more discrepancy between my numbers, even if my most assigned score is still 7. I'm still a softie with that, I don't think that'll ever change.
