NGE is a classic, well . . . I was11 and it all started with shaman king (i had watched DBZ + dragon ball, pokemon, digimon, sakura: cardcaptor before that though but never took any interest in the whole anime thing) When my friend came back from america, he brought the 2nd shaman king season because we saw the first on tv and we slowly finished it on youtube and a bout 3 months later i saw the manga in the library and well, you know the rest of the story . . . xD
