About orcmonkey2000
A note about ratings: Some people have the idea that if they even remotely like a show, it must be rated a 10. While I used to lean in that direction, as I have watched more and more anime over the years I have come to realize that the only way to differentiate between solid shows, good shows, great shows, and genre-defining masterpieces, is to actually use the 10-point rating scale the way it was intended. In other words, 6's, 5's, 4's, and even 3's and 2's have their place (although you won't see much of the latter from me; it's more likely that I'll indefinitely postpone a show with such a rating than actually finish it). So in closing, here's a brief summary of what I mean when I give out each of the following ratings.

(10) Defining Standard: This show completely revolutionized my definition of a truly great anime, or otherwise significantly raised the bar by which I rate all other anime. This does not mean the show has no flaws--it does mean the show's flaws are minor in light of its outstanding contributions to its genre.
(9) Exceptional: This show gets just about everything right. Although it may not revolutionize its genre, it hits all the right notes--a fairly original and engaging story, well-developed characters, solid animation and sound. Although the show may have a few fairly minor flaws, they do not keep it from standing out as a shining example of its genre.
(8) Great Fun: This show might not be the image of critical excellence, but it is pretty darn good. This rating is characterized by fun, enjoyable, engaging shows with one or more notable flaws that hold them back from a higher rating. Such flaws usually in some way involve a plot that could have been better, an unevenly developed cast, or (occasionally) a botched or unsatisfying conclusion.
(7) Slightly Above Average: This show is worth watching...if you don't have anything better on your plate. This show is not bad, it just needed a little more work before it was released. Shows with subpar or derivative plots, underdeveloped or stereotypical characters, or good ideas poorly executed will typically receive this rating.
(6) Run of the Mill: This show is not very good, and not very bad either. It is merely a rehashing of plot and character archetypes which can be found in a hundred other shows, usually with a shiny new twist or two. Occasionally such a show is worth watching for dumb amusement or as a cure for extreme boredom, but don't spend any money on it.
(5) The Epitome of Mediocrity: This show has little if anything going for it. Not only are its characters thoroughly stereotypical and its plot thoroughly derivative and uninteresting, but it contains one or more serious flaws that further limit the audience's enjoyment of the show. If nothing more can be said for this show, at least it is watchable, and its creators did not resort to cheap fanservice to try to rope viewers in.
(4) Not Cool Bro: This show has no redeeming value, and its creators knew it from the start. However, instead of scrapping it entirely or at least trying to redeem the basic concept, they instead injected loads of nudity/fanservice and vapid fetishistic stereotypes into the show in an attempt to make a quick buck. In this case the fanservice was light enough to have been forgiveable, if the show behind the boobies hadn't been so stinking bad to begin with.
(3) Steaming Pile of Crap: This show would have been given a 4, except instead of just a really bad plot behind the breasts...the breasts are all that's there to begin with. I'm not sure how I managed to finish this show, but I'll save you the trouble and tell you not to bother with it.
(2) Did Not Finish: This rating is reserved for shows which I was unable to finish due to outstandingly poor quality with absolutely no redeeming value whatsoever. Avoid shows with this rating at all costs.
(1) Did Not Finish: This rating is reserved for shows which I was unable to finish due to pervasive or flagrant offensive content, usually of a sexual nature. Avoid shows with this rating at all costs.

Yes. Yes you do need to watch it.

The English has been great.

For sure man, Kamina was epic and his relationship with Simon was definitely something special. I hope you enjoy marathoning my favorite series of all time!! The rebuild movies are really amazing too. When all is said & done they might surpass the original series. I can't wait to see 3.33. Glad I could give you that spark to go watch Rahxephon lol.

Kaji02 | 01-15-13, 9:28 AM
Guess I'm going to have to wait a month again to get a response lmao!

Hey man!! Finally got a break from school to watch some anime. I finally finished Gurren Lagaan & it was over the top amazing! All the attack names were so crazy. Galaxy sized fighting was epic as hell. My favorite character was Nia :( I loved the way she talked and the episode where she cooked was one of my favorites. Did you ever get around to watching all of Rahxephon?

Kaji02 | 09-12-12, 11:46 AM
Haha, I totally understand trying to get schedules with friends to line up. We watch anime in groups of 10 people. So whenever the stars aline our schedules we usually sit through at least half the series lol. Let me know what you thought of Rahxephon when you finish. Don't waste your money on the movie though, it's bad.
I think the stars are going to align this Friday and the anime chosen is Gurren Lagann, & since we have such high anime compatibility, I'm sure I'm going to love it!

Its very good. I've been watching it with a friend who loves it.

It doesn't move fast, but its building to a climax. And its also pretty deep. I was blown away by the depth when my friend gave a small snippet of his theory about it when trying to summarize the show for my sister.

I'd definitely recommend it.

Sup man, ever since school ended I've forgot about this place, now that it's starting back up I wanted to update my list & check in with my friends on here. I tried out Madoka, & it's pretty cool. My friends & I are currently watching Raxephon, it's good so far, reminds me of Evangelion.

Hydrazine | 07-09-12, 6:35 PM
Nah its cool. You just shouldn't be so lazy :P

I'm disappointed because none of them stood out to me as something I wanted to watch. No need to actually watch them to be disappointed with the selection. Nothing catches my attention.

And I laugh at your Muv-Luvin. It was pretty obvious what that show was going to be like, even with just the poster...

Hydrazine | 07-08-12, 5:34 PM
Well tomorrow is one month. :P.

Right now my list of shows from the new season consists of these shows:

Also, you have STILL not responded to me. I think if this goes longer than a month you automatically forfeit.

But there are other good anime you can watch.... Like GitS.

Hydrazine | 07-06-12, 8:57 AM
What happened to only watching a few shows at once???

Hydrazine | 06-12-12, 5:06 PM
It is not available in English AFAICT. I wish it was, because I'm over 100 chapters in and wanting to continue reading.

Hydrazine | 06-12-12, 4:09 AM
Haha, nice.

Zetman is decent. Since I cannot read the manga anymore I am left with the anime retelling (which I think is going towards a different track than the manga at the moment).

Overall a bit disappointing. It's been a few years since I've read the manga, and the action is good, but it should be so much better. The show is also only 13 episodes, so there is no way for it to have a resolving conclusion. (I think the manga is still running even today).

I'd warn there is one(I think only one) scene of barbie doll nudity and one scene with a little more than that. Just as a heads up.

I don't think that it is just opinion. The basic premise of the show is one that appears to set out to do Q (X + Y). X = explore the relationships of the primary characters, Y = uncover the events behind each person and what drives them. That is what can be gleaned from a brief overview of the show. This is what happens. However, you are correct that its more of a 75-25 split, with additional time spent of "slice-of-life" aspects (however obscured by the sci-fi flavor)

My point is that the show itself directs its attention too much on one segment of its focus, to the detriment of the other segment. This is a fault on the part of the show. Its not an opinion, but a clear evaluation of what the show accomplishes versus what it sets itself out to accomplish.

I agree that it does have very good characterizations, music, and thought provoking conclusion. But that is balanced by the downside of a plot that meanders and drops out worse than Monster.

My point is that the show sets itself up to be Q (X+Y) while only delivering T (R*X + 1/S*Y). That is a flaw.

Life is indeed serious, but to be a truly "slice-of-life" show it is much too serious. Half of the episodes involve the crew's inability to afford needed sustenance. If you really want to label it a "slice-of-life" there are many different characteristics that need to be taken into account. Cowboy Bebop does not contain the needed threshold.

I would not label it a slice-of-life, but if you would like to assert that it is, you'll have to take the initiative and provide your evidence. That duty is on the Affirmative.

I will also submit another argument.

The rating system may appear subjective, but it is not subjective. I have a defined rubric (in my head, not articulated on my page ATM) that I use to evaluate shows. One point is enjoyability. Due to Cowboy Bebop's flaws (some I've mentioned, some I have yet to articulate) I could not give it maximum values in enjoyability. Therefore, I have no duty or responsibility to follow the "common" trend of rating it a 10 "in spite of" what I feel is correct.

That seems to be what you are intimating by your statement ""acknowledging that the show itself, in spite of my personal preferences, deserves a 10..."" One should not feel the desire to conform to traditional values or those held by the majority in various social constructs. This is an nullification of personal responsibility and a deference to outside factors.

According to my objective rubric that I have determined, Cowboy Bebop does not deserve a 10. This while this may be an opinion, it is an entirely objective opinion, one based in objective measurements verifiable through personal experience.

Volley to you XD

Having watched the first two episodes of Boogiepop Phantom, the best comparison I can make is "Durarara!! with several debilitating psychoses." It has that similar style of perspective swapping, interlocking character arcs (that much is evident even just from the first two episodes) coupled with a creepy urban fantasy setting, similar to Durarara!! Tone-wise, however, they could not be more different. Boogiepop is a legitimately scary show, and I don't say that lightly. You should start watching so we can talk about it :P
