Maison Ikkoku is 15 volumes(14 if you read the old edition, which leaves out the first few chapters for whatever the reason).
As for it occasionally being listed as 9 volumes, I think that I read somewhere that it was recently re-released in Japan as a special edition version that only has 9 volumes, but I'm not entirely certain.

Maison Ikkoku's American release and the original Japanese Tankouban release are both 15 volumes. There are also wide-ban and bunko-ban releases (Japanese only of course) each at 10 volumes apiece. According to the Japanese Wikipedia there was also a 6 volume release done for convenience stores, though I've never actually seen it myself.
Anyway, hopefully you'll enjoy the series. I, personally, think that it's Rumiko Takahashi's best.

There are officially 15 volumes of the American set for Maison Ikkoku. Many sites have it under nine, but technically, all of the volumes are included in that nine. If there are any questions, just ask.

Well, it should has 15 original tankobons. The italian edition (the one I read) has 27 (shorter) volumes.

To add to what everyone's said, there's an old Viz release of Maison Ikkoku that's 14 volumes, but that one's missing some chapters. It was rereleased recently with the missing chapters, which made it 15 volumes. Well worth a read too - Maison Ikkoku's great. :)

Hi ^^, For Maison Ikkoku I bought 10 volume in big format which are equivalent to 15 volume in normal format :). I don't think there is a 9 volume format so I don't know :3~

Its a 14 volume series but when Viz republished it in the new format it became a 15 volume series because of the smaller size. Its a really excellent series =D
