I don't think I consider a playful line like 'your friend's a bully' to be trash talk.

'Your friend is a self-conscious statistics major who cannot help but read comments on someone else's wall if it involves the slightest mention of him' would be trash talk. It would also be hypocritical because I did the same.

Dash said that you were one of his brighter friends on the subject of math. I'm beginning to doubt that. You argued that the fans of the anime artificially raised the mean of VNDB's score on White Album 2. I said that that wasn't likely, and I went on the prove it. It's definitely not hermetic, but you had no bounds for suspicion in the first place. From what I discovered from a cursory 2 minute gander, and another, 2 minutes or so of calculation, was the mean, since the air, actually fell than increased.

Your analogies are absolutely bewildering. I have no idea what you're trying to reference with your apple analogy. It's probably far too advanced for a plebian like me to understand, so I won't doubt your unabashed brilliance.

I don't say this to a lot of people, to genuinely mean it. But you're an exception. It typically takes over 5 or so exchanges of vitriol from the other party to earn this insult. But you -- you're an exception. You've managed to persuade me, that you, as a statistics major, cannot understand the principles of simple arithmetic and division. Because of that, you're an idiot.

=[.

Okay.

Dashiawia | 01-09-14, 1:42 PM
Lol, is it that guy who made numerous false claims about fate/zero in roricon's video? When Lei pointed out his erroneous remarks, he continued to act like a prick and ridiculed his grammar, feigning ignorance on the arguments presented to him. I felt inclined to jump in after seeing such an inane response. :p

Dashiawia | 01-09-14, 1:28 PM
Yeah, I'm aware those aforementioned works have very different feels as a whole. But, like you deduced, I was mainly talking about the overall structure in the final pairings. WA2 isn't quite the same in that aspect.

P.S. Lei absolutely detested the WA2 anime, lol. He's one of those guys who found the protagonist revolting.

Dashiawia | 01-09-14, 1:13 PM
I've seen a few. There's true tears, rumbling hearts, sakurasou, toradora, and muvluv. All of them ultimately had the protagonist choose a girl, resulting in a happy ending (for the protagonist). WA2? Not so much.

Then again, I've only seen the IC anime adaptation; the CC's ending is probably more bright for the protagonist.

mdz | 01-09-14, 12:29 PM
I'll save you the trouble of proving the claim, by doing it for you.
http://vndb.org/v7771/votes

WA2's IC anime aired on Oct 6 2013.
Since then, there's been approximately 34 votes [+/- 2].

34/146 total votes, or 23.29% of the votes tallied were made since the anime airing.

Now, would the anime fans rate the novel highly as soon as the first episode hit?

Not likely. We'd have to wait until the halfway point, when Kazusa gets that much more adorable, and the stakes, that much more raised. At the rate of one episode per week, we can assume that [6 weeks after the air date; or from November 17th -> to have the greatest potential for inflated scores, with the present having the greatest chance (as it's done airing now)].

Since then, 23 of the votes [or 23/34 of the votes which appeared after WA2 aired] were accounted for. The mean of those votes would be

[(9+8+10+10+9+8+10+10+9.4+9.7+7+9+7.4+9.1+8+10+9+8.6+10+8+10+9.5+9)/23], or ~9.03 as the raw mean.

The current raw mean is at a 9.21. Meaning, that 6 weeks after the anime aired, the cumulative statistics provided imply that the average actually fell, rather than rose.

But then again, I've never been great with math. So, hey, who knows, you might be right.

P.S. It's not a difficult task.

I hope you enjoy the watch if you ever do get around to it.

Dashiawia | 01-09-14, 12:26 PM
Sounds like a plan. The protagonist may be kind of a douche, but he's also not entirely hatable. You will likely question some of his choices, though. That being said, I do think of WA2 as a great work, because it doesn't follow the standard love triangle/romance formula we see in most other works. The ending may not appeal to everyone, but it's arguably, logically sound.

mdz | 01-09-14, 11:57 AM
I don't mean to be crude. But to quote your eloquence to Dash.
[Remember why we begun talking in the first place?]

'I heard WA 2 is decent, but seems like the anime watchers inflated its rating on vndb hard.'

Semantically, we can assume that you claimed that the 'anime watchers inflated its rating on vndb hard.' Of course, I might be misinterpreting this text, as I clearly have a proclivity for libel.

---

I hope you enjoy it. It's a good work after all.

mdz | 01-09-14, 11:11 AM
Hmm? I noted your viewpoint on the topic of the VNDB debacle; I don't think it's particularly deviant, as the number's been rising for a while. Even now, it's microcosmic in comparison to the more played works.

WA2 has 146 votes.
http://vndb.org/v7771
It's been on VNDB for 3 or so years.

Cocoro Function is a novel that released a few months ago.
http://vndb.org/v12561
It has 50 votes.

It's not like White Album 2 has numbers ranging within the thousands.

http://vndb.org/v1306
Baldr Sky is untranslated. It has 268 votes.

I can't follow your logic on the topic of this.
Even if you look at the history of submitted votes:
http://vndb.org/v7771/votes

You cannot see a period with extremely abnormal ratings. There is no day or period where someone decides to push for '10s.'

WA2 is an extremely well-known title. It's the highest-rated visual novel on EGS, the Japanese-speaking version of VNDB. It's a wonder that it doesn't have more votes.

Eh, I'm the guy that prefers to enjoy the story that the author intended to be told. If I were egotistic enough to demand that each and every story were crafted to my specifications, I'd have delineated a genre so quixotic, so idiosyncratic, that I'd never watch anything outside of it. I'm fine with an annoying protagonist. Of course, I'll complain about him. But authors don't craft characters for the sole reason of being annoying -- there's further plans for them. I just have this odd penchant to allow the author to do that. To show me the story that he wants to be told, than to immediately express discontent with it. But that's me.

mdz | 01-09-14, 10:06 AM
Hm, WA2's ratings on VNDB hasn't deviated much since a year or so ago when I first found out about it. The bayesian rating wasn't as high, since it takes into account popularity [and it still isn't], but the median rating's been fairly consistent. WA2's currently rated at a little over 8 on MAL; that doesn't seem reasonable, for someone to want to rate it a 10 on VNDB.

LB!'s rating and S;G's ratings are different. The derivatives for those are translated, so there's a reasonable explanation for the vote spikes. Is it truly considered 'trolly' if someone enjoyed the animation, and decided to read the novel afterwards?

I don't think most people devote that much effort into making sure their favorites have high scores. Most people don't know what a visual novel is.

Hmm, then our opinions probably differ on that point. I don't particularly care about the characters, and how aggravating they are, if they tell a good story. Haruki's realistic, it's absurdly aggravating at times, just how realistic he and the other characters are. Realism isn't always enjoyable. But in this case, it crafted one of the better stories. I liked MLA because it tried to do everything and it did well with it. Did Dash really call the protagonist aggravating [to WA2?]. That's surprising, since in IC, he's fairly lax still.

Ah well, to each his own. I hope you find a work that you'll enjoy reading or watching.

mdz | 01-08-14, 11:36 AM
Just a random comment, but I saw your post on Dash's wall.

WA2's structure is similar to Clannad and its after story. The animation only covered the introductory chapter, there's still the concluding followed by the Coda. VNDB is a community primarily composed of visual novel players, not anime fans -- most of them do not know what a visual novel is. it's not quite highly-rated on VNDB and EGS without reason [the latter site of which, has it supersede MLA in score].

Personally, after reading both works, I rated MLA higher [10 as opposed to WA2's 9.8]. The latter of which excels only on one or so feature [character interactions, relationships, drama, writing]; but of that which it does do well in, it does it to a greater extent than any relative work.

Dashiawia | 01-07-14, 5:43 PM
=p. Golden Time takes a while before gaining momentum, so you may want to stick around a bit longer. I personally like the characters and how they have been developing. It's not as good as Toradora yet, but I found the college setting to be a breath of fresh air in the romance genre.

WA2 has some really good character-writing, but it's definitely not for everyone. If you can't stomach an aggravating protagonist, then you might not like it. Not sure how many anime viewers read the VN relying on translators. I don't believe many would want to go to such lengths, but I could be mistaken.

I don't know, man. Both are essentially great for me. WA2 is probably objectively better, while GT is subjectively more fulfilling. I'd say go with WA2 for now since it has already finished airing.

Dashiawia | 01-02-14, 3:05 PM
Happy new year, man!

You should try Golden Time and White Album 2 if you're in the mood for some nice romance/drama.

Nice Ever 17 review, lol. After completing the visual novel myself, I can certainly agree that it would be near impossible for any other medium renditions to truly capture the original source's brilliance. Though, perhaps a 24-26 episode anime adaptation by White Fox might be somewhat successful, since they did do an amazing job with Steins;Gate.

Well, for one thing, characters almost always behave consistently and logically in Sharin. In G-Senjou, there were a couple moments when I questioned certain characters' decisions; in Sharin, I found none of that stuff. This has a lot to do with the dystopian world mechanics of Sharin, which enforces absolute laws on its citizens, making them more conscious of their actions. Another thing I liked more in Sharin is that chapters feel more connected to one another due to the way the story is structured. Long story short, I thought the writing in Sharin was better due to a more consistent characterization, as well as a stronger connection from one chapter to the next [plot wise]. But I still rated it lower than G-Senjou because not every chapter was highly enjoyable, as nicely written as they were.

Oh, I might try it after it finishes airing. I'm already following too many shows as it is, lol. Monogatari is my favorite show this season, btw. You should resume Bakemonogatari when you have the time to. (Don't mind Lei's opinion. He's a silly person. =p).
