Always on the look out for a good series. I prefer the action/samurai style, but often find myself getting caught up in all different kinds. My introduction to anime was when I was a kid watching Battle of the Planets and Robotech. I was never partial to Speed Racer or Astro Boy, though.
I'm mid-thirties now, but I never considered anime, cartoons or comics as a children's venture. That may come from the fact that I draw and appreciate artistry. I can get caught up just watching the spectacular detail and artistry put into a show, even if the story sucks.
Though my tastes leans towards shows like Shigurui, I thought Azumanga Daioh was one of the funniest shows I've ever seen. I had never laughed out loud while watching an anime until I saw Sakaki get bit by the cat, twice. The swimming pool episode stands out as one of the funniest I can remember.
My biggest beef with anime series, are that many of the good ones end alluding to another season, but the next season never materializes.
I have more series watched than are on my list, I just have to get around to remembering them and updating it. If you can recommend any good series, please let me know.

I grew up in a place like that too, only we never threw shoes up on powerlines (we did other dumb things that were much less interesting). So the concept was new and fascinating to me XD
