I am a big fan of Yoko Kanno and when I watch anime I especially like stories and characters drawn from life, but also good Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Action. Best of all of it together or just nothing of that! ^^
For example CLAYMORE. I think there is a really great development in character, but the Action/Splatter sequences are fine, too! So, if you know anything similar msg me! Check my faves for more info on what I like!!!

To know ones darker sides is "interesting" to say the least =). What triggers a person, what makes a person cross certain lines, before they can't take it anymore, and either run or do battle to solve the situation.
I like them because like you say they try to reach to parts of ourselves that we, in one way neglect, but still exist. And also because they tend to require some more braincell work than other titles =)
