I look for anime that is entertaining, interesting, sincere, original, visually engaging, aurally immersive, intellectually stimulating and/or emotionally evocative. I score anime based on a combination of their objective quality (such as I see it) as works of entertainment and/or art, and of the amount of personal enjoyment I gleaned from them. I try to use the full scale, so that when I give a show a high score, it actually means something; anything scoring 5 or above I thought was at least decent, or may have enjoyed in spite of myself; alternately, it's possible I may have thought that a particular series or movie was well-made, but was neither fun nor interesting viewing for me personally. Works on the lower half of the scale are ones that I felt to be both poorly made and unrewarding to watch. I score anime as soon as I feel I have seen enough of them to judge them accurately. My scores are subject to change, just like my opinions are subject to change, because like anyone else, I am a constantly-changing individual. If you want to get a more specific idea of my tastes, I think my list ought to speak for itself. Feel free to comment or message me if there's anything you want to talk about.
I'm trying to improve my writing skills, both critical and creative, so I invite anyone with time to spare to please read my blog posts here and leave constructive feedback. I'd really appreciate it!

Hey Gatotsu.
Haha, I watched it; I don't know if I'd call it one of my favorites though. I can't really remember what happened in it at all. Good to hear from you though ^.^

Yeah, I've pretty much exhausted my desire to argue the topic of moe as well. Like most issues of taste no amount of argument is sufficient to make people turn away from something they like, regardless of their intellect. It still amazes and irritates me though that otherwise intelligent and mature people can enjoy such unbearable fluff as K-ON!, but my stance now is to pretty much ignore the existence of both shows and fans.
Regarding Mushishi, I doubt you will be disappointed. I've only watched the dubbed version and I found it superb. The Japanese styling isn't so strict that it must be imposed on every aspect, it's merely a setting for the story. As far as action goes, if you can enjoy a movie like Sky Crawlers, I doubt your tastes are so restricted that you will have a problem with Mushishi's downtempo, ethereal vibe.
Miyazaki's works are directed at children, so if you don't connect with them that's perfectly understandable. It all depends on what aspect of yourself you're looking to please. Grave of the Fireflies is still worth a go though, IMO. Takahata used an almost identical style to Miyazaki, but the story is much darker.
If action is a must though move Sword of the Stranger, Ninja Scroll & Black Lagoon up your list. Also, you might want to check out Mind Game, Wonderful Days & Spriggan. I suppose the new Berserk movie too, but personally I enjoyed the series more; better dialogue and character depth. The movie, disregarding the CGI elements, only surpassed the series in terms of animation quality, and personally I like the style of the series more anyway.

Hey, I saw your post on the moe and loli haters club page. Excellent writing, I really enjoyed reading through it. I've had my own attempts at this, albeit at a far lesser level than you achieved in that thread. Generally mine turn out more personal and neurotic in nature; due to my own faults, usually. Anyway, great to encounter a similarly minded fan of anime. Somewhat of a rarity, which is understandable given the nature of the hobby.
Looking at your profile I see that our lists match up rather closely as well. I highly recommend that you move Mushishi from your plan to watch list into your current; it's a fantastic series. Great character texture, surreal plot, exquisite animation and a musical score that I would put on par with that of Samurai Champloo's or Bebop's, in terms of pure quality and suitability that is. Also, all the works of Studio Ghibli & Miyazaki, despite their intended audience, are great viewing. They supply a true version of what moe shows ostensibly aim for, without the fluff or pedophilic undercurrents. Nausicaa & Grave of the Fireflies would be my recommended starting points.
I plan on using your list as a source of quality recommendations myself, I hope you might find the same utility from mine.

Hey how are you liking Gurren Lagann? I was really into it back in the day.

Oh man sorry if I might of spoiled anything, but I'm also getting a little tired of Casshern. It's not as great as I first thought it was. Actually that show has been recommended to me. They tell me its very good but I hate to start watching shows like that mid series. I would have to wait until they start airing them from the first episode, just like you with Deadman.
Although I do love The Walking Dead, have you seen that show? It's like my favorite show right now, the 3rd season is going to come out in October, can't wait!

So this Saturday Toonami aired the last episode of Deadman Wonderland. What did you think of it? I thought the action was good, though they really didn't develope the undertaker's character all that much.
The last scene was honestly pretty crappy, it was like a cliffhanger. If there is going to be a season 2, which it felt like there will be then the ending made sense. But if that was the actual ending meh.
Your feelings on the ending?

I'm going to check out that anime you recommended me. I saw the summary and it looks really good.
I'm also going to give Steins Gate a try since my friend wants me to see it and I really don't want to say no to her T-T. Besides, sometimes its good to watch something that I don't normaly see.

Yeah just looked it up and found out that it is made by the same people who make the boondocks. Well since Deadman Wonderland is already half way done I have to say it's grown on me since the first 4 episodes. And the exact opposite can be said for Casshern Sins. But then again Casshern is a 20 something series so maybe it will fall back in my favor.

oh yeah, have you seen the previews of this new show that's going to come out on AS called Black Dynamite? Is this an anime or something from the creators of The Boondocks. The animation looks way too clean and crisp for it not to be Japanese.

Never heard of that show but I enjoyed Samurai Champloo so I'll definetly have to give it a shot. I've also been told that Kino's Journey is a good anime. I've been wanting to see that one for a while but never seem to have the time.
Yeah man Deadman Wonderland has picked up big time. When I saw the preview for that episode I thought it was going to be another girl falls in love with boy type of cliches. Hummingbird was pretty bad ass, although she would be a girl I would never want to meet in real life. Crow has become my favorite character as of the moment, I dig cool loner type of characters.
I saw the credits during the first episode since I'm a huge fan of a lot of Funimation voice actors. I especially love Monica Rial's voice, very cute. I heard that Dismuke got replaced as Al in Brotherhood since his voice had changed too much. Puberty for ya. John Burgmeier is the head writer for that show and also my favorite voice actor of all time. Seriously I could talk about funimation all day...
Casshern Sins somehow has taken a back seat for me, it's too slow. At first I liked the pace but now I'm bored with it T-T.

Really? I was suggested to give it a try since I was looking for something different but the way you described it this sounds like something I would stay away from.
What would you recommened I watch? I'm looking for a fairly long anime 24 or 26 episodes long.

I kind of like the slow pace that Casshern Sins is going right now. As far as the main character "Casshern" I'm interested in his past but in a weird way I'm more interested in the current world's people/robots a whole lot more.
Yeah, trashy is kind of the right word to use when describing DW.

Hey Gato, I see your watching Casshern Sins so what do you think about it so far? I'm watching it on Toonami and I assume you are too. I'm pretty surprised I like it more than Deadman Wonderland.
