Shinkai uses the motif of how distance can affect relationships in all of his movies, so they are all kind of similar in that way. I didn't really like the sci-fi elements in Beyond the Clouds, but it was still a good movie with good visuals.
Out of all his movies, I would say that 5 cm is his best work, as the animation and music are great, while the story can be characterized as a more realistic version of Voices. You should watch it when you have time.

Hi! I couldn't help but find my way to your profile somehow and I saw that you've dropped Gungrave after the first episode. Please watch further! the first episode is utter crap as you most likely noticed but episode 2 and up are purely epic!
