Unfortunately, I only saw Azumanga Daioh on Youtube before going on to buy it on DVD, so I don't really know what fansubs are the best for it. Heck, I don't even know which fansub it was I saw on YT...
And I wouldn't say your assessment that it's a "lol generic moe girls comedy" is entirely inaccurate... Though I do believe it came out before the whole idea of "moe" was even particularly widespread to begin with...
