Oh dear fuck...
If you think the only 2 genres are metal and commercial pop, you're missing out on some great music.
Check out some music by The Decemberists. They're lyrical geniuses. The entire album Picaresque is amazing and definitely worth a listen.
Freelance Whales is another great band, both lyrically and musically. Pretty much anything off of Weathervanes is great.
Neutral Milk Hotel is a little hard for most people to get into, but the people who like it REALLY like it, so I figure it's worth a mention. There are a ton of WWII references in the album In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, most of them about Anne Frank. It's an unconventional album, but a masterpiece nonetheless.
There you go, some great music that falls into neither of those two genres. :)
