I started out as just an animation fan in general, not distinguishing based on country of origin, and I still have a few American favorites: Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, Animaniacs, Batman the Animated Series, Pinky and the Brain, the Powerpuff Girls, and Avatar. Also as a result I read webcomics and superhero comics, mostly DC, from time to time. I have found, however, that what with the sheer volume and availability of Japanese comics and animation, it's pretty easy to find things I like.

I've been watching anime for years, since the days of Samurai Pizza Cats, Dragon Ball Z, and Sailor Moon, but I became a fan around the time I saw Cardcaptors on KidsWB and Escaflowne on Fox. Around the same time, I got my parents to rent Princess Mononoke from a local video store, and I've been seeking out anime ever since.

Right now I'm learning Japanese. I started taking classes in September 2007, and that December I got a lot more serious. I decided to use a similar method to the one I had used for French: basically, listening to as much stuff in the target language as possible, but I was doubtful of the results because I started doing it with French when I was at a much higher level. Fortunately, I found various others online who had started pretty early with good results, and it has been much more fun with Japanese, mostly watching things I want to watch (importantly, without subtitles) and making good progress. As a result of this undertaking, I got into Japanese dramas that same December. My favorites include Mop Girl, Hotaru no Hikari, Bara no Nai Hanaya, and Gokusen, but I haven't seen very many yet.

As mentioned above, I speak French and I am learning Japanese, and I think you can guess by now that my native language is English. At one time I wanted to learn tons of languages, but now my goals are more modest: improve my Japanese and French, and later on perhaps Spanish (useful where I live), Korean (for the dramas, music, and the writing system), and/or American Sign Language.

And that's as much as I want you to know. :)

Ashrie | 10-23-08, 5:48 AM Re: CLAMP I do like Wish, but that one took me a bit to get past the first volume too, heh. I love the ending of it though. :) I basically had the same reaction to the Chobits manga and anime, even if I found Chii to be a bit annoying at times. And the fact that she is programmed "to love" made me cringe a bit. I mean, how much of her feelings aren't just part of her programming? That's what the show left me with...lol I have read the first 2 volumes of X, and seen the anime adaptations of it... but I don't know if I want to continue the manga, considering that it is on hiatus. The Tsubasa anime feels like a crossover, AU fanfic. The animation is quite crap. I'm only going to continue it because... well, I like Fai's character, and the opening and ending theme songs are good. XD The xXxHolic manga though is one of the better CLAMP titles I've read in a while because, even if it references other stories, it still feels original enough. I would love to read the Card Captor Sakura manga someday :) Overall, I find that I need a bit more patience than usual to get into CLAMP's stories though, which is a shame because their ideas are really original most of the time... I guess, since they produce such a large library of titles, the quality is going to be unevenly spread? Reply

Ashrie | 10-18-08, 1:45 AM Haibane Renmei is one of my all time favourites too :D The first time I saw it was at a convention all the way back in 2003, where they showed the first four episodes... and I was hooked then. I even bought the promotional poster the licensing company was selling. Still have it to this day :) I'm planning on rewatching it again soon, as I just finished Serial Experiments Lain, and I love Yoshitoshi ABe's art. It'll probably be the 5th or 6th time I rewatch it :) Reply

rabupink | 10-10-08, 3:37 AM yay, we can feel old together now! ^^; back then when you had to explain what anime is and people still would call it cartoon ^^;;; at some point I can understand though, that people would say that they don't watch anime from before 200x. The animation and all is just so different now, the whole style of drawing has changed so much, too. What we used to know as normal is retro now...retro! ^^;;; about webkare, it's a mixture of a game and social networking site. You can decide on one of the characters as you boyfriend and then you talk to him by clicking on him. It's a little like a dating simulation. Oh, about Japanese btw, I'm not that good either, I suck at grammar >_< but if you want to have a webkare, there is an international bbs, too, so you don't need to be that good in Japanese to play anyway ^^ (if you join add me!!! *_* ) Reply

I think it's the fact that one can find out about so many different series that otherwise you might not have discovered, and have so much information about each here. Its easy to find something you might like or might be interested in. My plan to watch list has grown quite a lot since the start of my membership here... :) Reply

Ashrie | 10-01-08, 7:17 PM Having just watched it over again, may I recommend "Maria-sama ga miteru" to you? It is a subtle, elegant series, that might be really slow paced in parts, but it is a really great show to watch. :) Make sure to add it to your "Want to buy" list... ;) Reply

Anomalous | 09-17-08, 4:28 AM I'm a big fan of SuperS (second favorite season after S) but I agree that Fisheye's definitely one of the best parts. Chibiusa definitely is a lot more likable in it well, it's too bad a lot of people still hate the season because she's in it. It's a mystery~ :O Reply

XD There are so many out there, that it's hard to keep count :) I wonder if there is a source that states how many VN-to-anime adaptations there are? But yeah I agree. I think most otakus in Japan buy these games for both the story and the CGs. And there are always going to be those that want just those CGs and obtain those exclusively... I ended up loving the Utawarerumono anime because of it's storyline. I guess, what surprised me most of all about it is that it didn't seem too much like a harem show at the time of writing that entry (by the end of it, it does become more obvious lol) Reply

My laptop (a Dell Inspiron PIII 1 Ghz) can be taken completely apart in under 5 minutes! o.O They still sell very well on eBay and I think they're a good alternative to all those eeePC-type of notebooks. :P Reply
