Kaori is a vibrant and lively character who, to me, represents a gleaming hope in the face of absolute despair. In a way, she is a character whose will to live is intertwined with her soul and her purpose to life embedded in her very being. Because human existence is a subjective and philosophical enigma, it is often hard to describe with objective certainty the purpose for which one lives. Many live through life never knowing what they truly desire, what they truly enjoy, or what they truly long for. People like me, among many others, subconsciously and perhaps even externally strive to find a purpose for our existence. Yet we find ourselves living our everyday lives in blissful ignorance of our perceived purpose and conduct various activities that veil our sisyphean strive for meaning. When faced with death, these defense mechanisms experience a precipitous collapse thus allowing for our various subconscious insecurities to catch up to us and induce within us an unmatched fear for the abysmal and eternal isolation that is awaiting. Kaori Miyazono, at the young age of fourteen, was faced with this unfathomable despair and in her morbid realization she was able to bravely come to terms with the inevitability of death along with the brevity and ephemeralness of life. By valiantly confronting death rather than succumbing to its constricting nature, she was able to develop a concrete and meaningful sense of living—one that is epitomized by her free-spirited, spontaneous, vivid musical performances and almost obsessive care for Kousei. Regardless of whatever it is, in this particular case romantic escapade and music, Kaori has found something that pushes her to live life to the fullest and as such was able to attain a sense of euphoric contentment and fulfillment in life. While Kaori may just be another character, the sentiments she embodies and the background she manifests synthesize and intertwine in such a way that creates a unique spectacle of impeccable perseverance and triumph. She has found a meaning to life and acted to fulfill it in a way that is very much hers—assertive, steadfast, and exceedingly resolute. While her external character and visual appearance is arguably mediocre, the profound accumulation of her various idiosyncratic aspects represent a vivid and sincere image that far transcends her seemingly straightforward imprudence. Thus, what is most intriguing and what is most profound about her is not within the specifics of her traits or personality but rather in the image that those elements accumulate to represent—a strikingly admirable spectacle whose sensational imagery of triumph and perseverance in the face of despair and misery that is inherent to the morbid reality has the remarkable ability to inspire and galvanize even those most pessimistic.
