Welcome to the list of an unrepentant anime user and abuser who is struggling to remember all the celluloid joints she smoked in the past and document them (as a warning?) for posterity.

A few explanations regarding my favorite anime--only serialized anime are included here, as I felt that it doesn't make sense to compare movies with series: movies generally suffer due to their shorter length, yet they usually have the unfair advantage of larger production values.

Mushishi: if you can put the conventional expectations regarding large plotlines on hold, it will reveal its subtle, graceful beauty to you.

RahXephon: Intelligent, emotionally complex, and painstakingly produced, this show is Mecha done right.

Gunslinger Girl: Some may accuse this show of being a loli-melodrama. I can't quite argue against that except to say that its sensitive and understated treatment of the subject brings loli-melodrama to a level of pure excellence.

Ouran: Sometimes you need a crazy yet beautiful show to bash all the conventions of shojo, or anime-otaku-ism, or reverse harems. When you accidentally happen upon a show that does all of the above without completely sacrificing a touch of genuine emotion, you've hit anime gold.

Utena: At the risk of seeming like a shojo fangirl (to those who haven't seen the show, of course), all the weird Freudian symbolism and crazy leaps in reality have earned Utena a place on my list.
