Yeah, I'd personally say that Rewrite is the best thing Key ever made. As for Ryukishi07, I usually dislike what he does, but the heroine route that he wrote for Rewrite was awesome. Second best heroine.
Anyway, I'll refrain from ranting any more, because I think I might end up spoiling something if I do. ( ¬‿¬)

Well, the show is basically all about the characters.
And yeah, the first couple episodes area huge info dump, which does make it somewhat hard to follow.

Ergo Proxy - Definitely recommended. It's really good.
Horizon - A lot of people didn't like it, but I did. First 3-4 episodes are one huge info-dump, more or less, and a lot of people couldn't keep up with it, dropping it there. Later on though, it gets awesome. And there's a second season scheduled for Summer 12, I think.
Aoi Bungaku - I liked it mainly because I like literature. After all, the series consists of a couple of classic novels being animated. Not everyone will like that one.

Eh, I dunno about School Days being too much for a beginner, because I watched it quite early in my anime days, too.
I was like "OH SHI---" at the end, but then I kinda thought it was good.
And yeah, Lelouch's too awesome to die. Though I do understand the symbolism in his death, as well.

Eh, I dunno. Check my highest rated shows.
Anything rated 9 or 10 is stuff I'd recommend to anyone and everyone.
And as for Code Geass... I'd personally say he didn't. But well, I think I heard something about the director making it like that because people would get to make their own interpretations about the ending.

Right. And it even makes sense with the whole thing being called White Album and Yuki meaning snow and whatnot. I wonder how I could forget that... Oh well, no matter.

Yeah, the anime most likely follows Yuki's route, or at least some kind of hybrid of Yuki and Rina's routes.
And Makoto was full of lulz.
Touya was just a jerk.
But now that you mention it, they are quite alike, in a way. 'Cept that Makoto's actually mentally retarded while Touya's at least got some brains.

Uh, well, White Album was like ages ago. Hardly remember anything.
What I do remember, though...
Touya was a jerk, Yayoi was a bitch, Rina was pretty awesome, Eiji was an idiot.
And I also remember that I don't remember the name of that other girl. ( ¬‿¬)
Oh and I'll probably play through the VN one of these days.
Or rather, I might order the PS3-remake of the VN. It's supposedly revolutionizing the whole visual novel industry, I gotta see if it's true. ( ¬‿¬)
