This is one of my favorite animated films and I'm a proud owner of the DVD. Metropolis doesn't slow down and is interesting from beginning to end and is accompanied by incredible animation. The character designs by Osamu Tezuka look GREAT in the colorful digital animation of this film, released in 2001. The stylistic look of the film is addicting and fascinating, creating a spectacular setting that you can really indulge yourself on.

The plot is fairly easy to follow and the characters are easy to like. It's a good sci-fi story with its own elements of social commentary. I rarely end up liking stories involving robots, but I have a soft spot for their oldschool portrayal in this film. I'll admit, though, the plot isn't as solid as could be, but it still has a very solid foundation and nice pacing to it.

Metropolis is an enjoyable film with eye-popping animation that I have no doubt anyone who starts this visual adventure of a masterpiece will watch all the way to the end, and will probably appreciate it. read more

It's not very often where I wonder why under the member stats, there are scores given as high as a 5 on an anime because usually, i can see at least one reason why someone would like a certain anime. This? No way.

Speaking as someone who really liked the original Nadia series, this movie is a disgrace to everything the series stood for and everything that was great about it. The story is horrible, the characters are just a fragment of what they were like in the series and the animation is just plain bad. Even the hardcore Nadia fans should stay away from this one and it's definitely an experience that needs to be wiped from your memory. There is just nothing here worth watching. read more

Ghost Stories, oddly enough, is MUCH better in the English dub version than the original Japanese version, and it still isn't that great. The English dub tries to take an anime that takes itself way too seriously and make it funny, but even then, doesn't produce much more than a smirk from the audience. However, the Japanese version is unbearably serious and is practically impossible to watch.

The series is made up of short stories ((one per episode)) about ghosts, goblins and related demons. The main characters always get themselves involved and attempt to figure out these poorly written "mysteries" in the usual, cliche fashion.

The animation is average, with so-so character designs you've seen before and environments that bring nothing new to the table. The ending is also unspectacular and not memorable in any way.

Watching one episode of the English dub is all I could recommend for anyone to watch because that is more than enough to know what the whole series is like. To watch more episodes is to just watch more of the same. read more

After watching and enjoying Full Metal Alchemist the series, this movie was a major disappointment. It almost felt like watching a strange AU fanfiction made into animation. The film has many plotholes and never really feels complete, plus the characters you got to know from the anime didn't seem "in character", giving the whole feel to the series a touch of awkwardness. The animation is also a little "weird" compared to the series and the ending felt far from satisfying ((but then again, the whole movie was far from satisfying)). The action is purposeless and there's not many entertaining moments.

I wouldn't even recommend this movie to fans of FMA since it doesn't really make sense within the realm of the series and feels like pointless, useless filler, but I also wouldn't recommend the movie to newcomers to the FMA world since the story takes place after the anime is over. As a conclusion, there's nobody to really recommend this movie to. read more

ROD started out as a really fun anime full of action, humor and extremely likable characters. The soundtrack is unique and "cool" that give a certain mood to the series that really fits. The animation and character design is also rather pleasurable. However, about halfway through, the story heads towards stagnation as if the creators had run out of ideas. Even though I watched the last half more recently than the first half, my memory for the first half is better since there just wasn't much notable material with the second half. The real killer to the series was the bland, predictable ending that was a complete failure of a finale.

This series was definitely one that starts off with huge potential, but flatlines after a point in such a bad, horrible way that the whole anime was killed for me. In a way, I wish I hadn't seen the last half because the first half was seriously cool! read more

Howl's Moving Castle has to be the most overrated of all Miyazaki's films. While it produces legendary animation and a wonderful soundtrack, the story is dull with characters that are difficult to get attached to at all. There is very little character development and many of the characters seem absolutely useless to the plot. The relationships between the characters are also sloppily done with a rushed feeling to them, making them feel like nothing special. Also, not enough is learned about ANY of the characters' pasts and many of their actions seem inconsistent with the personalities you previously thought you knew, making it unpredictable in a bad, random kind of way.

Based off a novel I never read, this is continued proof that Miyazaki just fails to deliver great films when the story is not of his own writing. It is obvious that these characters are not that important to him.

I do think this is one film that wouldn't be a complete waste of time to pick up because of the incredible and colorful animation. It's excellently done and it's a shame it was wasted on such a lousy story. read more

At some point not too long ago, I randomly stumbled across the synopsis of an anime called "Welcome to the NHK". I had never heard of the series before, but for whatever reason, it appealed to me just enough to decide to try watching it. Without doing much of a check on the series, like who made it and other details, I jumped right in with the first episode, which quickly became the first 5 episodes. At first, I was practically trying to dislike it ((I don't see myself as an anime-tard at all)) but it was hard to just turn off. Over a period of about 4 days, I had finished the 24-episode series, including 11 episodes in one sitting.

And I don't regret it one bit.

"Welcome to the NHK" is excellently written, based off a novel that was later made into a manga written by the same author, so there is no reason to freak out when you see the 'GONZO' in the opening credits!!! I admit that before I did research into the origin of the series, I had my doubts when I saw it was made by GONZO. I'm not a fan of their anime, but it seems that when they do an adaptation of someone else's writing, they can really create something special. "NHK" is tightly written and is heavily character-driven, focusing around 22-year old Satou Tatsuhiro, his social anxieties and the people around him, including a teenage girl who wants to help free him of his 'kikikomori' ways. There are few characters to keep track of, making the series extremely easy to follow along with, and the characters are well-flushed out and developed. It also helps that they all turn out to be extremely likable and easy to relate to.

I'm not usually a fan of 'slice of life' anime, but "NHK" will have to be my exception. The psychological aspect of the story tied in with a touch of social commentary creates an interesting and addicting mix.

On the technical side, the music is amazing and adds to the overall atmosphere of the series. However, character animations are rather inconsistent but the backgrounds and environment are beautifully done ((the one thing that we all love about GONZO anime)).

Also, unlike many anime I've seen, the ending is perfect and satisfying as well as being one of the few cases where I didn't think I could have done it better.

As much as I truly enjoyed "NHK", there's a possibility that it wouldn't appeal to all anime fans. It really is an adult story written for the 18+ crowd and there's likely to be little the younger anime fans will find to enjoy. It lacks action and despite it's simplicity, it's rather deep.

Overall, "NHK" is up-and-down emotionally, with some very funny moments to moments that can really bring you down. The main character is a bit of a tragic figure and there's a good amount of dark humor.

In the end, this is one that no one will regret watching from start to finish. It's both refreshing and inspiring and is among the most heavily character-driven anime I've seen ((and I've seen a lot)). read more
