There were hints of that in the anime (like archer calling Ilya "Ilya"). But I didn't get them either too :P
Personally, I'm a fan of tsundere characters, I like the way they yell at people because the other person is right.
FMP bored me really bad. Maybe I'm just not a mecha/ military person. Chidori is too generic so there was really nothing special about her
