Well, that I can get. Sorry about my own reply, too. Deleted that from your profile for you. Just do me a favor and be more sensitive in the future, please? I know you're learning the language and the Japanese culture may be a great draw, but people can take your comments completely out of context and be needlessly offended. Otherwise, hats off to you for being a multilingual British kid (I hail from Canada)!

Um...no problem, man. You're...not actually Japanese, are you?

The comment was very offensive. If you knew anything about China-Japan relations, you'd understand. But hey, no hard feelings.

No problem.
Glad I could help : )

It's my pleasure to help people who dare choose this crazy language. I thought Japanese was relatively easy one because the pronunciation system is quite simple. But my friend from Holland said that's one of the biggest problem. So many words with the same pronunciation and different meanings. One German friend said the more you learn the harder it gets. Anyway, hang in there. I'll support you if there is anything I can do for you.

We keep on studying kanji until the end of the high school years, and still more to learn after that (about 2000 characters in total). The best way to get used to kanji is disassembling them into "部首 bushu parts". "絶望 zetsubou despair" can be dissected into "糸,色,亡,月,王". Some parts correspond to the meaning and some to the pronunciation. Assume you encounter a unknown kanji "煽". You don't know the meaning, but you can guess from the parts "火 fire" and "扇 fan". "煽" means fanning a fire and the meaning have developed to stirring up the public.
Here is a funny song about kanji. Some Japanese kanji have extraordinarily long pronunciations. You don't have to learn these characters. No Japanese remember these either.

Hi, Yamo10.
You don't need any special keyboard for typing Japanese characters. My German colleague has a German PC with German Windows XP, but he successfully found a way to type Japanese without any additional installing. When you turn on the Japanese input mode (Windows IME for example), typing "nihongo" is automatically translated into Hiragana "にほんご". If you are happy with Hiragana, hit "enter" to fix the typing. If you wanna change it to chinese characters, hit "space" and "にほんご" will be transformed into "日本語". This "transform & fix" operation is unique to the languages with chinese characters.
If you have more questions about anything related to Japan, I'm willing to help you. And thank you for celebrating my birthday!
